BILL COBBS was born and raised in Cleveland, where his mother was a =
cleaning lady and his father was a construction worker. As an actor at =
at historical Karamu House Theater, he starred in the Ossie Davis play =
"Purlie Victorious". Cobbs was an Air Force radar technician for eight =
years; he also worked in office products at IBM and sold cars in =
Cleveland. In 1970, at the age of 36, he left for New York to seek work =
as an actor. There he turned down a job in the NBC sales department in =
order to have time for auditions. He supported himself by driving a cab, =
repairing office equipment, selling toys, and performing odd jobs. His =
first professional acting role was in "Ride a Black Horse" at the Negro =
Ensemble Company. From there he appeared in small theater productions, =
street theater, regional theater and at the Eugene O'Neill Theater. He =
made his Broadway debut in "The First Breeze of Summer" and later =
appeared in Anthol Fugard's "Master Harold...and the Boys" and "Ma =
Rainey's Black Bottom".=20

His first television credit was in "Vegetable Soup" in 1976, a New York =
public television educational series, and he made his feature film debut =
in The Taking of Pelham Ine Two Three in 1974. Throughout his film =
career, he has built a long list of credits; "Brother From Another =
Planet," Moses in "The Hudsucker Proxy," Whitney Houston's manager in =
"The Bodyguard," the memorable old man who shot Nino Brown in New Jack =
City, and made-for--TV dramas like "Decoration Day" with James Garner =
and Ruby Dee, "Nightjohn," "Always Outnumbered with Laurence Fishburne." =
"Sunshine State," "Enough," and will soon be seen in the film =
"Retirement," stepping into role for the late Ossie Davis. Perhaps his =
most memorable television appearance is his role as Regina Taylor's =
father on I'll Fly Away as well as in the TV movie version I'll Fly =
Away: Then and Now.
