Wonderful singing and expressive acting will take the Cleveland =
Institute of
Music stage on Friday, April 28 at 8:00 p.m.; Saturday, April 29 at 8:00
p.m.; and Sunday, April 30 at 3:00 p.m., when the CIM Opera Theater =
presents
its spring scenes program, The SoundS of Music. Tickets for this event =
are
$15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. To order tickets, =
guests
may call 216-791-5000, ext. 411, Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3
p.m., or visit cim.edu <https://secure.cim.edu/tickets/> to purchase
online.

The repertoire features works in which the composers have required the
singers to produce unusual musical effects. According to CIM Opera =
Theater
Director David Bamberger, these pieces "free the students from any
stereotype of 'operatic acting.' There's not much room for 'being a =
diva' if
the composer asks you to be drunk, or to sneeze!"

In addition to direction from Mr. Bamberger, John Simmons will serve as
music director and accompanist for the program, which will be presented =
in
concert format with piano accompaniment.

Most of the selections are from famous works. These include Mozart's The
Magic Flute (where Papageno must make music even though his mouth is =
shut by
a padlock), Adele's "Laughing Song" from Die Fledermaus, Olympia's "Doll
Song" from The Tales of Hoffmann, a large excerpt from Gilbert and
Sullivan's The Pirates of Penzance (highlighted by much musical =
gossiping
and chattering), Rossini's The Italian Girl in Algiers (a musical =
version of
the ultimate Excedrin headache) and Puccini's La Boh=E8me (including =
Musetta's
laughter and her famous scream).

The Opera Theater will also present a selection from one man who was
celebrated in his own day, but is now largely unknown. Paisiello is the
composer whose version of The Barber of Seville was knocked out of the
repertoire by Rossini's. Students will perform a wonderful trio from
Paisiello's Barber in which Dr. Bartolo has to cope with two servants =
who
are out of condition. Figaro has given one a sleeping potion, the other =
a
sneezing powder. As a result, Dr. Bartolo has to deal with a household =
staff
that produces highly unconventional SoundS of Music.

David Bamberger has staged more than 150 productions on three continents =
in
styles from grand opera to musicals. Co-founder of Cleveland Opera, he =
was
the company's general director from 1976 to 2004, building it into one =
of
America's major regional opera companies. He secured The Three Tenors in
Concert to celebrate its 25th Anniversary. At the insistence of Jerome
Robbins, he staged the dialogue scenes for West Side Story, thus gaining
permission for Cleveland Opera to be the only opera company in the =
Western
hemisphere permitted to re-create Robbins' original choreography. Mr.
Bamberger's work from coast to coast ranges from The Barber of Seville =
at
Lincoln Center (New York City Opera) to The Ballad of Baby Doe (Los =
Angeles
Music Center), with such stars as Roberta Peters, Beverly Sills and =
Sherrill
Milnes. For Santiago, Chile, he staged Rigoletto and Lucia di =
Lammermoor.
Productions for the Israel Academy of Vocal Arts include La Boh=E8me and =
La
Cenerentola. In 1990, he represented the opera industry before Congress,
testifying in a successful effort to garner support for the National
Endowment for the Arts. He has served on the Boards of Directors of =
OPERA
America and as a founder of the National Alliance for Musical Theater. =
Mr.
Bamberger's many honors include the Ohio Governor's Award for Arts
Administration and doctorates from Swarthmore College, Cleveland State
University and CIM.=20

John Simmons is CIM's opera coach. He has appeared in numerous recitals =
in
Austria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Italy and in the U.S. at
Weill Recital Hall and Merkin Hall in New York City. A student of =
Yoheved
Kaplinsky, Mr. Simmons received a Master of Music degree in piano
performance from the Peabody Conservatory. He also holds a diploma in =
piano
performance from the Hochschule f=FCr Musik und Darstellende Kunst in =
Vienna,
Austria, where he studied with Paul Badura-Skoda. Mr. Simmons has =
coached,
taught and performed at the American Institute of Musical Studies (AIMS) =
in
Graz, Austria, the Spoleto Festival USA, the Centro Studi Italiani, the
Amalfi Coast Festival, the Shaker Mountain Festival and the Lincoln =
Center
Festival.

CIM OPERA THEATER - THE SOUNDS OF MUSIC
DAVID BAMBERGER, director
JOHN SIMMONS, music director
The world of opera often describes the emotion of love, but the great
composers have also used music to portray many other effects including
laughter, inebriation - even sneezing! The CIM Opera Theater will =
explore
these many sounds of music with scenes from celebrated operas, =
highlighted
by opera's most famous scream in Act 2 of La Boh=E8me.=20
Tickets: $15 adults; $10 students and seniors
For tickets, call (216) 791-5000, ext. 411, Mon.-Fri., 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. =
