FYI:
=20
Channel 3 aired a report last week that said some absentee ballots may
exceed the weight for first-class postage but the story claimed the post
office will deliver them anyway. This might not be accurate.
=20
The Board of Elections said the postage is and has always been regular
first class. She then referred me to someone in the media department who
said he thought that the Democratic ballot was heavier because it
includes precinct committeemen, and required more postage. When I asked
him how absentee voters were supposed to know this, he responded that
they should have determined when they mailed it how much postage it
should have. He seemed totally uninterested in the potential problem.
He said he would research it and get back to me.
=20
If ballots are being returned to voters for insufficient postage, there
many be many who do not have enough time to get them re-mailed and to
the Board of Elections by the deadline. This would result in the
disenfranchisement of both college students and older voters.
