WEATHERVANE PLAYHOUSE

Presents Part II of the Tony Award-Winning Epic

Angels in America Part II: Perestroika

Weathervane Playhouse will present part two of Tony Kushner's epic play =
Angels in America: Perestoika, May 18 - June 4, 2006. This play =
continues the story of Angels in America: Millennium Approaches which =
was first mounted in January 2005 as the inaugural production in =
Weathervane's new John L. Dietz Theatre. Millennium Approaches was =
remounted this fall, partly because of its previous popularity but also =
as a prelude to this production of Angels in America Part II: =
Perestroika. Directed by Sean McConaha, this WCP staging has three new =
cast members: Scott Shriner (Joe Pitt), Celeste Cosentino (Harper Pitt) =
and Jonathan D. Wray (Belize). Returning to their character roles are =
Jim Viront (Roy Cohn), Scott Crim (Louis Ironson), Sean Derry (Prior =
Walter), Dede Klein (Hannah Pitt) and Dana North (The Angel).

Angels in America, written by Tony Kushner, is a courageous exploration =
of the universal themes of love, loss and the possibility of redemption. =
Kushner's full play is a seven-hour, two-part play -- a masterful epic. =
It has received a Pulitzer Prize, two Tony Awards, two Drama Desk =
Awards, the Evening Standard Award, two Olivier Award Nominations, the =
New York Critics Circle Award, the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle =
Award and the LAMBDA Literary Award for Drama. In 1998, London's =
National Theatre selected Angels in America as one of the ten best plays =
of the 20th century. About Angels in America, Newsweek magazine wrote, =
"The entire work is the broadest, deepest, most searching American play =
of our time."

Weathervane Playhouse presents Perestroika part two of this two-part =
play which continues the story with the angel explaining to Prior that =
God has abandoned his creation, and that Prior has been chosen to =
somehow stop progress and return the world to the "good old days." Prior =
tells the angel he is not a prophet, he's a lonely, sick man. At the end =
of the play we see Prior, Louis, Belize and Hannah sitting on the rim of =
the fountain in Central Park with the statue of the Bethesda angel. They =
say that when the Millennium came, everyone who was "suffering in the =
body or the spirit and walked through the waters of the fountain of =
Bethesda would be healed, washed clean of pain."

These four characters represent Jews, Christians and agnostics; =
homosexuals and heterosexuals; blacks and whites; men and women; =
caregivers and patients; two generations - the American mix of people =
who care about each other.

Tony Kushner, a gay Jewish socialist, was raised in Louisiana. His other =
plays, A Bright Room Called Day (1985) and Slavs! (1994), are also =
concerned with the moral responsibilities of people in politically =
repressive times. Such concerns may be especially relevant in America =
today, where, as he observes: "What used to be called liberal is now =
called radical, what used to be called radical is now called insane, =
what used to be called reactionary is now called moderate, and what used =
to be called insane is now called solid conservative thinking." At a =
time when many playwrights were thinking small, Kushner crafted a =
sprawling tapestry unafraid to embrace large political, social, and =
spiritual themes. By invoking the ghost of Ethel Rosenberg as well as =
Aramaic texts, this Pulitzer Prize-winning epic, full of mordant humor =
and literary zest, uses its ethnic and sexual specificity to illuminate =
the American experience.
