THIS WEEK AT FUSIONFEST '06
A CELEBRATION OF NEW WORK IN THE PERFORMING ARTS AT THE CLEVELAND PLAY HOUSE

Events for the week of May 2 - 7, 2006
THEATER
Custody of the Eyes by Anthony Giardina, directed by Michael Butler
NOW though May 21 Drury Theatre
On an island in Maine, a young priest, Edmond, is accused of an intimate
association with a female congregant, Sheila. A bishop and another priest
are called to investigate the charges of impropriety. As the story is
recounted, we see how Edmond and Sheila meet. Sheila wants Riley, her
eleven-year-old son who has leukodystrophy, to receive communion. Edmond
tries to educate a child considered incapable of communication. As Edmond
becomes more involved with Sheila and Riley, he begins to question his
religious and human role. In need of her own spiritual guidance and
companionship, Sheila challenges Edmond's humanity, while threatening his
priesthood. A provocative world premiere!
The Cleveland School of the Arts New Play Festival
Fittin' In By Chris Webb Directed by LaRon Cooke & Dericka Holifield May 3-4
7:00 p.m.
Leonard, an African American 16 - year - old university student with a keen
interest in ethnographic research, comes to Cleveland to stay with his
cousin to study urban culture in the "hood." Being the walking opposite of a
teenage thug, not to mention a mega-nerd, Leonard invites a "whole lotta
mess" as he goes "incognito" to learn about the lifestyle, language, social
habits and "mating rituals" of contemporary teenage urban hip-hop culture.
Without You By Tanisha Welch Directed by India Colbert May 2-3 7:00 p.m.
Brenda and her sister Lisa go to college together. Brenda hasn't seen Eric,
her old boyfriend/hapless stalker since graduation. So what is he doing at
her college as a transfer student? Is he still a "nut-job" or has he changed
like he insists? And why is he carrying a ring? And what is Melissa, Lisa's
roommate, doing sniffing around this poor excuse for a man anyway?
Two Places at One Time By Yasmine Williams Directed by Yasmine Williams May
2 and May 4 7:00 p.m.
Isiah is college bound African American junior at a predominately white
affluent suburban high school; all is going well until his mother suffers a
devastating stroke and Isiah is compelled to move in with his father and
attend an inner-city school. In the process Isiah is forced in the process
to deal with his estranged father, hostile peers, broken hopes and dreams,
and what it means to him to be Black in America.

The Cleveland Play House Next Stage Readings
May 5-18 7:30 p.m.
THE OBSERVATORY by Greg Germann May 5
The Observatory is a two - hundred - year - old stone ruin that sits on a
hill overlooking the Hudson River. Built to watch the stars, it is now a
decayed place to watch the ships and the years pass by. Well known as an
actor ("Fish" on Ally McBeal), Greg Germann has written a powerfully
observant and bitingly funny play that asks- is what we believe in
important, or just that we believe in something? Is who we love important,
or just that we love someone?
MUSIC
Opera Cleveland presents The Tyrant
May 2-7 8:00 p.m.
Love of power compels a tyrant to cling to his throne, physically never
leaving it for fear of being overthrown. As the king listens to his castle,
his fears manifest in each noise out of place, driving him slowly into
madness. A LIMITED NUMBER OF TICKETS HAVE JUST BEEN RELEASED.
The CPH Club Cabaret series presents Lounge Kitty
May 5 - 6 9:30 p.m.
Often referred to as "Deviant cabaret", Lounge Kitty and her band combine
music, verbal banter and extemporaneous antics into each show. Song
selections span from jazz versions of heavy metal and rap, to traditional
blues and pop. Lounge Kitty delivers each performance decked out in vintage
evening gowns, go-go boots and a foot-high bouffant hairdo. The act has been
described as campy, silly and bizarre but never boring.
DANCE
MOCA presents Trace
May 4 -5 7:00 p.m.
MOCA Cleveland has partnered with two of Cleveland's most prominent
choreographers and dance artists, Michael Medcalf and David Shimotakahara,
