HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WVIZ/PBS PROGRAM APPLAUSE FOR MAY 2006=20

Emmy Award-winning ideastreamsm production focuses on northeast Ohio
arts and cultural activity=20

APPLAUSE, the Emmy Award-winning production of WVIZ/PBS ideastreamsm
hosted by Dee Perry spotlights northeast Ohio's rich arts and cultural
scene. Features this month on APPLAUSE include a profile on Japanese
Taiko drum master Eitetsu Hayashi, an interview with Cleveland native
and filmmaker Marquette Williams; a retrospective of Ohio Ballet's
founding artistic director Heinz Poll; a performance by children from
the Rainey Institute; and a conversation with CIA graduate Marc Brown,
creator of the PBS Kids program ARTHUR.

Now in its eighth season, APPLAUSE airs on WVIZ/PBS ideastream Thursdays
at 7:30 pm, with repeat broadcasts on Saturdays at 6:30 pm and Sundays
at 1pm.

APPLAUSE team visits the Cleveland Institute of Art to learn more about
the school's acclaimed digital program, and then explores the "All
Digital" exhibition at The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA).

The East Cleveland Public Library is an organization in the midst of an
expansion. Greg Reese, ECPL director gives an update on progress, and
provides perspective on the goals of the project. This episode of
APPLAUSE also features an interview with award-winning Akron Beacon
Journal syndicated cartoonist Chip Bok, and a conversation with Gary
Bukovnik, discussing his latest collection of watercolors on view at the
Bonfoey Company. =20

Thursday, May 18, 7:30 pm. (repeats Saturday, May 20, 6:30pm and Sunday,
May 21, 1pm)

                Japanese Taiko drum master Eitetsu Hayashi recently
visited northeast Ohio to conduct a residency program with area
students, the realization of a partnership between Ohio Arts Council,
Tri-C, CSU, Trinity Cathedral, Playhouse Square and the Cleveland School
of the Arts. APPLAUSE watches as Hayshi works with students at CSA, in a
workshop that took place at Idea Center, and in a brown bag concert at
Trinity Cathedral. In another segment, APPLAUSE host Dee Perry
interviews writer/director and Cleveland native Marquette Williams whose
first film "Buckle Brothers," was released in 2005. During Heinz Poll's
31-year tenure at the Ohio Ballet he choreographed more than 60 works
for the company. In a featured retrospective, APPLAUSE presents archived
interviews and other footage highlighting Poll's illustrious career.=20

Thursday, May 25, 7:30 pm. (repeats Saturday, May 27, 6:30pm and Sunday,
May 28, 1pm)

            The work of landscape artist April Gornik is on display at
the Allen Art Museum in Oberlin through June 4 and the APPLAUSE cameras
provide a tour of the Cleveland native's exhibition. The Rainey
Institute was established in 1904 to serve the cultural needs of the
Hough neighborhood including music, dance and theater. Children
participating in current Rainey programs will offer a special dance
performance. Marc Brown, the creator of ARTHUR the PBS Kids program
meets with host Dee Perry to talk about life as a student at the
Cleveland Institute of Art and his career as illustrator of the most
famous and well-loved aardvark.
