I'M NOT PAYING FOR THIS
Directed by Michael Schiralli
May 4-13, 2006
The Gordon Square Theatre

CLEVELAND, OH - Executive Artistic Director Raymond Bobgan is proud to welcome back Varla Jean Merman as she returns to Cleveland for her fifth year in a row in "I'M NOT PAYING FOR THIS!" The production runs May 4th through 13th. The cabaret-style seating for the show once again includes tables of ten that can be reserved for an additional charge by a group. New this year for the run: Saturday night shows at 10:00pm.

Varla Jean Merman takes you on a guided tour of the Seven Deadly Sins in her brand new show "I'm Not Paying For This!" which runs from May 4th - 13th . From the Garden of Eden to her own den of iniquity, who better to explore a Dante's Inferno of lust, gluttony, greed, envy, pride and anger than that award-winning, flame-tressed celebutante? Feel the burn as Varla rains down fire, brimstone, hilarious new videos, sassy songs and dancing pickles. Like most of the men in Varla's life, you'll leave shouting, "I'm not paying for this!"
The Cleveland Plain Dealer calls her "Outrageously Hilarious!" The New York Times commented "...a first-rate singer and actor...awesome." The reviewer for The Opera News calls her show "the best club act I've ever seen."

  VARLA JEAN MERMAN
With the help of intense self-hypnotherapy, Varla Jean Merman came to realize one day that she, herself, was the golden child and only spawn of the thirty-eight day marriage of Ethel Merman and Ernest Borgnine. But even with such showbiz royalty in her relative midst, Miss Merman has worked tirelessly and exhaustingly to make it on her own. Planting her roots firmly in one-woman experimental cabaret, Miss Merman dazzled several Bourbon Street piano bar patrons in her hometown of New Orleans with such heart wrenching one-woman musical revues as "Songs My Mother's Estate Ordered Me Not To Sing"; "She's De-lightful! She's De-Lovely! She's De-linquent!"; and "More Songs My Mother's Estate Ordered Me Not To Sing."

But it was while working in the kitchen of a suburban dinner theatre that Varla went from chopping green onions to chewing the scenery, when she was handed the plum role of Laura in Tennessee Williams' "The Glass Menagerie", turning the play into a one-woman star turn after the entire cast was ravaged by an intestinal bacterial infection. From this groundbreaking performance, Varla garnered several certified letters from the Tennessee Williams Estate as well as an all-expense paid bus ticket to New York, personally paid for by the surviving cast. Drawing on her experiences in New York, she then wrote, produced, waitressed, and starred at Eighty-Eight's Cabaret in her one-woman, Brechtian-inspired "Are You Gonna Finish That?"

But her biggest break came in 1994 when Miss Merman channeled yet another tragedy (having her kidneys stolen in a Dress Barn fitting room) into the one-woman musical revue "You Could Have Had My Heart." While waiting for a donor, Miss Merman has been traveling the world, from Pasadena to Provincetown, starring in more of her own one-woman cabarets. Upcoming projects include lobbying for the title role in the live-action film version of the cartoon "Strawberry Shortcake", her Judy Blume revue "Are You There Blubber? It's Me Superfudge", and a one-woman musical based on the life of catalog queen Lilian Vernon, "Somebody Needs This." Varla is thrilled to be at the Cleveland Public Theatre for the fifth time!

JEFFERY ROBERSON co-starred in the 2003 film "Girls Will Be Girls", for which he received a Best Actor Award from the 2003 Outfest Film Festival and a Best Actress Award from the Aspen HBO Film Festival. He also appeared on Broadway in the role of Mary Sunshine in the revival of the hit musical "Chicago." Jeffery made his network television debut on ABC's "All My Children" in the recurring role of lady of the evening Rosemary Chicken. Last spring he made his Australian debut with "Varla Jean Merman's Girl With A Pearl Necklace" which played the Sydney Opera House, the Perth International Arts Festival and the Forum Theatre in Melbourne. He also won rave reviews as Miriam in "Hush Up, Sweet Charlotte" last year at the Lorraine Hansberry Theatre in San Francisco. Jeffery wrote and starred in the short "Improve Your History With Varla Jean Merman: Stonewall!" which can currently be seen on MTV's new gay television network LOGO.

Last November Jeffery appeared at the Long Wharf Theatre in Hartford Stage's production of "The Mystery of Irma Vep" directed by Michael Wilson performing the roles originally made famous by Charles Ludlam. Other film and TV credits include HBO's Dragtime, E!'s Fashion Emergency, E! Goes to Cannes, MTV's True Life: Mardi Gras, and Francesca Page with Rossy DePalma. Jeffery has appeared in many TWEED Fraktured Classiks productions in New York City, including "The Mailman Always Comes Twice", "Screen Door" and "CAGED!" with Lily Tomlin, Joan Rivers and Isabella Rossellini, "Lypsinka is Harriet Craig", "The Miracle Worker" (with Charles Busch) and "Varla Jean Merman is The Bad Seedling". Jeffery has opened for Jennifer Holliday and has also shared the stage with Betty Buckley, fulfilling his utmost gay fantasy, singing excerpts from the notorious Broadway flop "Carrie" as part of Ms. Buckley's cabaret act at the Bottom Line.

Upcoming appearances include "Varla Jean Merman's Girl With A Pearl Necklace" in Toronto in late May, "Varla Jean Merman's Under A Big Top" at the Victoria Theatre in San Francisco this June, and a world premier new show in Provincetown this July and August.
