  Britten's Rejoice in the Lamb
On May 7th at 3:00 p.m. the Music Ministry of Church of the Saviour in Cleveland Heights will present its Spring Concert.
The featured work on the program will be Benjamin Britten’s cantata, Rejoice in the Lamb which will be performed by the Chancel Choir under the baton of Music Director Judith Higbee with Robert Day handling the complex organ accompaniment. Soloists will be R. Brooke Baker, Abigail Skully, Troy Ayers and Jason Fair. This 20 minute work uses sections of a long poem by 18th century poet Christopher Smart written while the deeply religious Smart was in an insane asylum. Britten's musical setting matches the text in being both quirky and deeply moving revealing Smart's many flashes of genius.
This free concert also includes a lively selection of music ranging from Mayim an Israeli folkdance to the African hymn Siyahamba arranged for handbells. Gloria Tibi from Bernstein’s Mass will be performed by the King David (children’s) Choir and tenor Troy Ayers who frequently performs with Opera Circle.
Also performing on the concert will be Bells of the Saviour directed by Virginia Steiger and the Carol Choir directed by Julie Green. The Liturgical Dance Ensemble directed by Carol Griffith will present the joyous Psalm 150. .
The concert concludes with over 70 voices performing a majestic setting of Psalm 23 which includes a French horn solo which will be played by Lydia Benish, a member of Cleveland’s Contemporary Youth Orchestra.
Church of the Saviour is located at 2537 Lee Road in Cleveland Heights, one block north of Fairmount Blvd. and the church is handicapped-accessible.
For more information please call the church office at 216-321-8880 or Judith Higbee, Director of Music at higbee at chsaviour.org
