UA names theatre professor James Slowiak as Outstanding Teacher

Akron, Ohio, May 15, 2006 -- Four distinguished University of Akron
faculty received Outstanding Teacher and Researcher awards at the
university's annual May Founders Day luncheon on May 5.

Recognized for their classroom and research excellence were 2006
Outstanding Teacher awardees Dr. Gustavo Carri of Akron, assistant
professor of polymer science, and James Slowiak of Akron, professor of
theatre arts; and 2006 Outstanding Researcher awardees Dr. Il-woon Kim
of Fairlawn, professor of accounting and international business and
associate director of the Institute for Global Business, and Dr. Daniel
Smith of Stow, professor of chemistry.

Dr. Gustavo Carri of Akron joined the university in 2000. He was
recognized for his outstanding teaching in both the standard classroom
instruction and in the laboratory, where he instructs polymer science
undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate students. He earned master of
science and doctoral degrees in polymer science and engineering from the
University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and a master of science degree
in macromolecular science from Case Western Reserve University. He is a
member of the American Physical Society and the American Chemical Society.

Outstanding Teacher award recipient James Slowiak of Akron joined the
university in 1989. He is passionate about his teaching at the
university, as well as the internationally acclaimed New World
Performance Laboratory, which he co-directs with Jairo Cuesta. His
enthusiasm for theatre art results in successfully motivating students
to excel beyond their expectations. At UA, Slowiak teaches acting,
directing, voice, movement and contemporary theatre styles. He received
a master of fine arts degree in directing from the University of
California at Irvine, and a bachelor of arts degree in anthropology,
French and dramatic arts from Macalester College. He has directed more
than 50 theatre events and conducted numerous workshops in performance
ecology and creative training techniques around the world.

Dr. Il-woon Kim's research interests include developing cost management
models, examining current practices of management accounting,
comparative analyses of accounting practices in different countries,
target costing, and theory of constraints. His research has been
disseminated to the business community and used for teaching in many
business schools in the United States. A native of Korea, Kim received
the 2004 Distinguished Alumni Award from the College of Business and
Economics at Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea, where he earned his
bachelor's degree. He holds a master of business administration degree
from Arizona State University at Tempe and a doctoral degree from the
University of Nebraska at Lincoln. He joined The University of Akron
in 1986.

Dr. Daniel Smith has been at the forefront of research designed to apply
polymeric materials for various biomedical applications. His research
has contributed to the development of prosthetic devices, medical
adhesives, and most notably, nanofiber bandages that significantly
improve slow-healing wounds. Smith joined The University of Akron in
1976. In addition to being a professor of chemistry, he is a professor
of biomedical engineering and a faculty research associate in the
university's Institute of Polymer Science. He earned his doctoral
degree from the University of California at Berkeley, and his bachelor
of science degree from Wisconsin State University.
