When only a few people came out for auditions for Much Ado About Nothing,
Director David Van Gaasbeek placed the play into hiatus. "We are waiting for a
new day with the Bard," he stated. "However, we are going to do a play from
July 6-9, 2006." Pulling out of the archives of plays that he has written
over the years, he has pulled a romantic comedy about a modern day community
theatre called "Rommel and Patton, a romantic comedy".
The play is based in fictional East Hempstead, Ohio, and the director
and the assistant director are looking forward to doing the play that they have
so meticuously cast. However, before the first rehearsal, both the lead
actor and actress become unavailable and the director must recast the leads.
After reviewing her options, she decides reluctantly to cast the play with two
divas who can't stand each other's guts. The play which looked like such a
sure shot is now a battle similar to a World War II battle as the divas fight
continuously over every aspect of the play and their lives. By the end, all
hell is ready to break loose. Titled "Rommel and Patton" after the two
legendary World War II generals who fought it out in North Africa, this play is in
two acts and will last one and one half hours.
The characters needed to be cast are:
(1) Joe Morrison- the lead actor- a veteran of community theatre who
cannot seem to get it through his head that he is not the director. His
constant directing not only causes the director to blow up but the Carol Norris- the
lead actress.
(2) Helen Johannsen- the assistant director- a young actress who is
learning the tricks of the trade from Jane Merrick- the director. Savvy and
cute, she shows that she is able to stand up to the divas when necessary.
(3) Toni- the female supporting actress- a woman who believes the show
must go on even if her kids have the flu and are home vomiting. She is the
look on the bright side type person.
(4) John- the male supporting actor- a man who acts out of fear and
tries his best to be compliant to everyone.
The parts of Carol Norris and Jane Merrick have been cast from the
auditions for Much Ado About Nothing. However, all four parts listed above are
substantial and any actor and actress would find it challenging to do them.
Auditions are Monday, May 22 at 7:00 pm and Tuesday, May 23 at 7:00 pm.
The location of the theatre is 363 Cherry Street SE, Canal Fulton, Ohio.
It is within the United Methodist Church of Canal Fulton and this play will
be played as theatre in the round.
If you are in need of additional information, please call Dave Van
Gaasbeek at 330-494-1022 or 330-854-4387. You can email him at

There has been a great deal of discussion of precasting on Mr.
Sternfeld's site. Except for Carol Norris and Jane Merrick who were cast from
auditioners from Much Ado, there is no precasting. Rehearsals are Monday through
Thursday, 7:00 to 9:30 pm.
