As summer approaches, the City of Akron Recreation Bureau is gearing up =
for its fourth year of the Lock 3 Summer Arts Experience.  This =
innovative program, based on the Gallery 37 program in Chicago, will =
team artistically oriented students with artists who will mentor them in =
a work readiness and arts education program. =20

=20

New to the program this year will be the addition of five symposia for =
student apprentices and community members to participate in.  These =
symposia will be conducted on Wednesdays from 12:00 pm to 12:45 pm.  We =
are currently looking for panelists to facilitate and/or participate in =
the symposia.  Please join us for a lively lunch-hour discussion. =20

The symposia will be held on the following dates with the following =
topics:

1.  July 11-Symposia #1 - Topic  "You Call THAT Art?" =20

12:00-12:45 pm Lock 3 Stage

Discussion of what defines art.  Manga, graphic novels, graffiti, and =
video games meet art museums, architecture and Thomas Kindcade.  At what =
point does one "sell out?"  Also discussed; the gains/losses of making =
art on commission, working for the man, etc.

2.  July 18-Symposia #2 - Topic  "Do Art, Get Paid." =20

12:00-12:45 pm Lock 3 Stage=20

Discussion of employment opportunities in the arts or arts related =
opportunities.  Can you do art and get paid?  Professionals speak about =
what they do and how they got there;  gallery, education, public art, =
freelance, illustration, etc.  What did you give up?  What are the =
gains/losses?

3.  July 26-Symposia #3 - Topic  "Pink and Blue-Gender Roles in the =
Arts."

12:00-12:45 pm Lock 3 Stage

Discussion will explore which art forms are deemed for women/men only.  =
Exploring feminist art and what are the pros/cons of its exclusionary =
style?   What are women's roles in art from a historical perspective?

4.  August 1-Symposia #4 - Topic  "What's Mine is....Mine?" =20

12:00-12:45 pm Lock 3 Stage

Discussion of the importance of diversity in the arts.  Cultural =
representation and misrepresentation and the gains/losses of becoming a =
"voice" of a culture or ethnicity that is not your own.  What is "off =
limits?"  What challenges are faced when representing your own culture?  =
How much of your identity as an artist come from your culture?

5.  August 8-Symposia #5 - Topic  "Working Networking"

12:00-12:45 pm Lock 3 Stage

Discussion of local arts organizations and the purpose they serve.  Who =
is invited to become a member?  How do you become a member?  Why become =
a member?  How do the groups function?  What projects do they do?  What =
are the pros and cons of being a part of such an organization?
