  This class will give students the basics for sketching, illustration =
and design in drawing. Students will also be introduced to various types =
of cartooning and learn the basics on creating cartoon characters.=20

  This class will explore various surface treatments and sculpture =
techniques in clay. It will include carving, stamping, negative and =
positive space as well as instruction on figure sculpture including =

  Explore the colorful world of mosaics! Students will create various =

Multicultural Arts Teacher Institute - African Art=20
June 19-22 from 8:15 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
Cost: $180, includes all materials & continental breakfast=20

Open to all educators and artists! Through a series of lectures, =
discussion groups, and hands-on workshops in visual art and music, =
participants will learn about selected arts from the African culture =
focusing on Ghana and how to integrate elements of the various art forms =
into their curricula.=20

On day 1 of the institute Kent State African Studies Professor Murphy =
Ajayi will begin with a presentation on art and society in Africa =
focusing on the cosmology, philosophy aesthetics, meaning, and function =
of African Art.=20

  This day and the 2nd day continues with artist Peggy Wertheim who will =
teach batik with the theme African culture and symbols. The third day =
will focus on Adinkra Symbols (African symbols of Ghana) and story =
canvases. Each of these symbols represents a thought or statement, not =
just a sign. Participants will make stamps based on the symbols. From =
the stamps they will create a story canvas which then can be presented =
in class. Once batik projects and story canvases are completed on day =
four, we will break out into discussion groups and work on lesson =
planning according to grade level.

  Participants will also work with local artist Kol=E9 Robinson on the =
history and significance of African drumming. Ms. Robinson will provide =
a hands-on demonstration with participants.=20

This class is designed for those students with little-to-no experience =
working on the potter's wheel. Emphasis will be placed on beginning =
wheel-throwing techniques including wedging, centering, pulling, =
trimming, and finishing. Students will learn how to create functional =
ceramic pieces such as bowls, mugs, plates, and other items. Techniques =
for creating handles and surface decoration will also be explored. Class =
fee includes clay, slab roller, wheels, glazes, and firing of several =
pieces. Limited space available.=20

Spend the day at Rosby Greenhouse painting beautiful summer flowers in =
watercolor. Open to all, students should have some experience working in =

need.  Workshop will be held at Rosby Greenhouse and Berry Farm located =
