In the play, which is based on Ken Kesey's classic 1962 novel, Randle P.
McMurphy (Chris Crimaldi) has landed himself in the state mental
hospital because he believes that life would be easier there than on the
Work Farm where he is serving time for contributing to the delinquency
of a minor. Once inside, McMurphy mobilizes the patients with his skewed
view and rebellious tendencies, and actually seems to help his fellows
overcome their mental and social problems, but the hospital authorities
are not amused. In particular, Randle finds a fearsome nemesis in the
harsh and dictatorial Nurse Ratched (Natalie Bauman). /One Flew Over
The Cuckoo's Nest/ deals with themes of freedom vs. authority,
repression of sexuality, individuality, and the right to basic humanity,
through a dark and satirical lens.

/One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest/ is probably best known for Jack
Nicholson's appearance in the Academy Award winning 1975 film
adaptation. The staged version was revived on major stages to critical
acclaim in 2001 with Gary Sinise in the leading role at Steppenwolf, and
again in 2005 with Christian Slater at the Garrick Theatre in London's
West End.

When Chagrin Valley Little Theatre premieres its production of Dale
Wasserman's /One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest/ on June 9th, it will mark
the return of not only the show itself, but some of its original actors,
to the CVLT main stage. Chagrin Valley Little Theatre may have been the
first non-professional theatre in the Cleveland area to perform the
play, having first produced it in 1973, just 2 years following its
successful Broadway premiere, which starred Kirk Douglas in the leading
role (Wasserman's earlier three-act adaptation had opened and failed on
Broadway in 1963). The original CVLT production included local actors
Sy Levine and Wayne Merholz, both of whom will be appearing again in the
new production set to open in June. The play's director, Bob Kmiecik,
appeared in /Cuckoo's Nest/ himself in 1974 at Bay Village's Huntington
Playhouse. All three men have remained active in community theatre
since over the past three decades, appearing in a number of shows at
Chagrin Valley and elsewhere.
