The Baroque Performance Institute Announces its 35th Season
With =93Airs from the South: Italian Musical Influences Throughout =
Europe=94

Internationally acclaimed historical performance musicians and scholars=20=

convene June 18 =96 July 1 for concerts and lectures at the Oberlin=20
Conservatory of Music.
A schedule of public concerts, including a staged performance of the=20

OBERLIN, OHIO (June 8, 2006) =97 The Baroque Performance Institute =
(BPI),=20
America=92s premier summer workshop for baroque instrumentalists and=20
vocalists, will mark its 35th season by celebrating the influence of=20
Italian music and musicians throughout Europe.
	The two-week institute, held at the Oberlin Conservatory of =
Music,=20
begins Sunday, June 18, and concludes Saturday, July 1. BPI=92s=20
internationally renowned faculty of acclaimed performers and scholars=20
will train their lens on Italy with =93Airs from the South: Italian=20
Musical Influences Throughout Europe.=94
	BPI=92s participants, who range from young musicians in high =
school to=20
young professionals and adult amateurs, will receive intensive=20
instruction on a large variety of baroque instruments as well as=20
lessons in voice, choral conducting, and baroque ornamentation. Their=20
days and evenings will be packed with private lessons, master classes,=20=

ensemble coaching, lectures, informal open discussions, enormously=20
popular classes in baroque dance, and concerts featuring BPI=92s faculty=20=

members. Many of these concerts are free and open to the public; select=20=

concerts require a ticket, which may be purchased at the door for $10.=20=

Concerts will be held at the Conservatory=92s Warner Concert Hall, Kulas=20=

Recital Hall, and Fairchild Chapel, located in Bosworth Hall, one of=20
several buildings on the Oberlin College campus designed by renowned=20
architect Cass Gilbert.

The BPI Faculty
Conductor and cellist Kenneth Slowik is BPI=92s artistic director; he is=20=

also the director of the Smithsonian Chamber Music Society and a member=20=

Concerts and Events
The first faculty concert on Friday, June 23, at 8 p.m. in Kulas=20
Recital Hall, will be one of two rare opportunities for audiences to=20
hear BPI=92s world-class faculty members perform together. In keeping=20
with BPI's thematic title, the chamber music program will include=20
Italian-influenced music from Poland, England, Germany, and France. The=20=

concert will open with a four-part Canzona by the early-17th-century=20
Polish composer Marcin Mileczewski, whose work was modeled on sonatas=20
by Marini, Farina, and Castello. Viola da gamba players Catharina=20
Meints and BPI Artistic Director Kenneth Slowik will offer an=20
unaccompanied duo sonata by Johannes Schenck, and oboist Gonzalo Ruiz=20
and violinist Marilyn McDonald pair up for one of Georg Friderick=20
Handel=92s trio sonatas. The Italian sonata influence is also heard in=20=

the prefatory Sonade (as the French transliterated it) to Fran=E7ois=20
Couperin=92s La Pi=E9montoise. Recorder player Michael Lynn is the =
soloist=20
for a chamber concerto by the Englishman Roberto Valentino, who, as his=20=

adopted name suggests, spent much of his creative life in Italy. Two=20
secular cantatas with Italian texts by Johann Sebastian Bach will round=20=

out the program: Amore traditore, BWV 203, featuring distinguished=20
Dutch baritone Max van Egmond and harpsichordist Webb Wiggins, and Non=20=

sa che sia dolore, BWV 209, featuring flutist Christopher Krueger and=20
soprano Penelope Jensen.
	The second faculty concert, on Friday, June 30, at 8 p.m. in =
Warner=20
Concert Hall, will open with with two concerti grossi in the Italian=20
style by two non-Italians, Unico Wilhelm van Wassenaer and Pieter=20
Hellendaal. Gonzalo Ruiz will bring the first half of the concert to a=20=

virtuosic close with a reconstructed oboe concerto by J.S. Bach.
  The second half of the program will present a semi-staged version of=20=

the Terpsicore Prologue to the 1734 revival of Handel=92s Il Pastor =
Fido.=20
The BPI orchestra will be joined by soloists soprano Kendra Colton,=20
singing the role of Erato, the Muse of music, and mezzo-soprano=20
Jennifer Lane, singing the role of Apollo. The performance features=20
members of the New York Baroque Dance Company, whose artistic director,=20=

Catherine Turocy, will choreograph the production.
	Monday through Thursday of the weeks of June 18 and June 25, BPI=20=

faculty members will present free lectures and/or =93faculty fringe=94=20=

recitals, beginning at 1:30 p.m. in Kulas Recital Hall. Of special=20
interest will be a discussion on Tuesday, June 20, which will pay=20
tribute to BPI=92s founder, oboist and viola da gamba player James B.=20
