Hello! This edition of the Square Peg Promotions arts calendar includes
music concerts, theatre, dance, written and spoken word gatherings, and
visual arts events happening in Stark County and surrounding areas...and
what a week of the arts we have!=20

=20

I hope to see many of you at the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce=92s =
BRAIN
GAIN MEET-UP this Wednesday in downtown Canton...which is free, but
reservations are necessary! (330-456-7253) Yes, I know...Rebecca =
Ryan
forgot to tell the Chamber that it=92s nearly impossible to get Brain =
Gainers
to commit in advance for a social event!!! This writer forgot to RSVP =
until
receiving a friendly reminder last Friday...so please, consider this =
YOUR
friendly reminder that we=92d LOVE to have you join us for the fun, the
networking, and the beautiful view from the Canton Club terrace.

=20

This weekend, we are offered a veritable performing arts FEAST! There =
are
multiple theatre productions, music concerts representing nearly every
genre, including the BLUES FEST; a book-signing by a dear and =
accomplished
local author; classes and workshops at local art galleries and =
libraries;
and a very busy weekend of performances for most of Square Peg=92s =
clients and
friends. Please take this opportunity to support our local artists, =
venues,
shops, and restaurants!

=20

On a far more serious and political note than usually graces this
newsletter: we regret to inform our readers that on June 13, 2006, the
Committee on Appropriations of the U.S. House of Representatives =
approved
legislation that would slash funding for public broadcasting and arts
education programs. This will cut $115 million from the Corporation for
Public Broadcasting (CPB), the primary agency for our nation's public
television and radio broadcasting, and zeroed-out a $36 million funding =
pool
for arts education programs through the U.S. Department of Education. =
For
more information on how you can make a difference (investing as little =
or as
much time as you wish...), please check out our =93Time Sensitive
Opportunities=94 section in this newsletter.=20

=20

Get Up. Speak Up. ACT up!

The Area Coalition of Theater in Stark (ACTS)

North Canton Playhouse

This meeting is open to the arts community to discuss collaborative
productions. Meeting Description: Often, theaters are limited in the =
number
of productions they can present each season. Mounting productions is
typically one of our largest financial burdens not to mention the strain =
it
can put on volunteers and personnel. As a result, ACTS would like area
theater companies to explore travelling productions. At this meeting, =
we
will review our schedules for next season and investigate whether or not
shows with limited sets could possibly travel around the area to fill =
some
of our "dark" stage times. This would provide casts the opportunity to
perform additional shows, it would provide greater county within the
community for all ACTS theaters, and would allow each of us the =
opportunity
to fill voids in our seasons without the added costs of mounting =
additional
productions. Please join us if you would like to explore this =
opportunity.
ACTS will continue to hold periodic meetings on specific topics. If =
those
topics interest your organization, please join us. For more info, =

Time-Sensitive Opportunities:

We regret to inform our readers that on June 13, 2006, the Committee on
Appropriations of the U.S. House of Representatives approved legislation
that would slash funding for public broadcasting and arts education
programs. This will cut $115 million from the Corporation for Public
Broadcasting (CPB), the primary agency for our nation's public =
television
and radio broadcasting, and zeroed-out a $36 million funding pool for =
arts
education programs through the U.S. Department of Education. =
Unfortunately,
both of these cuts had also been requested in the President's FY 2007
budget. Only one amendment to partially restore $20 million in funding =
back
to CPB was adopted in full committee today, which would still leave the
agency with a devastating cut. For the sixth straight year, the House
Appropriations Committee has eliminated funding for the Department of
Education's arts education programs. We urge you to please visit =
Americans
for the Arts E-Advocacy Center to urge your Representative to vote to
restore the funding to these vital programs when the bill comes to the =
floor
later this month. We encourage you to forward this email to friends and
colleagues that may be interested in arts education and public =
broadcasting
issues. If you have any questions, please contact Justin Beland, =
Government
Affairs and Grassroots Manager, at jbeland at artsusa.org. We thank you =
again
for your continued support of the arts!

Having a Ball: Costume Drawings by Viktor Schreckengost from the Akron =
Art
Museum

Emily Davis Gallery, Folk Hall, The University of Akron, 150 East =
Exchange
St., Akron

Monday through Friday, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. FREE admission.

While the Akron Art Museum=92s galleries are closed for =
expansion,
the museum is collaborating with The University of Akron to present this
exhibition, which celebrates the artist=92s 100th birthday by featuring =
twelve
dazzling large-scale drawings of Schreckengost=92s costume designs for =
Akron=92s
Rubber Ball of 1939.

Schreckengost is one of the most prolific artists and =
designers
in the history of American art. Renowned for his work in ceramics, =
sculpture
and toy and industrial design, Schreckengost also created theatrical =
sets
and costumes during the 1930s. In 1939, he designed the costumes for the
King, Queen and royal court of the Akron Rubber Ball, a lavish social =
event
attended by more than 4,000 people. The costumes represented the four =
basic
elements (earth, fire, air and water) as well as other factors =
contributing
to the fabrication of rubber, such as chemistry and industry.
Schreckengost=92s designs=97which featured intense colors, bold shapes =
and a
variety of rubber-based fabrics=97embodied the energy and spirit of the
country as it emerged from the Great Depression. These drawings are part =
of
a group of works (representing all of the costumes that Schreckengost
designed for the Rubber Ball) that are promised gifts to the Akron Art
Museum from Viktor and his wife, Gene.

Having a Ball is one of more than 100 exhibitions taking =
place
across the United States this summer as part of Viktor Schreckengost:
National Centennial Exhibition, an event spearheaded by the Viktor
Schreckengost Foundation. To learn more about this nationwide =
celebration
and the artist himself, visit www.viktorschreckengost.org.

wife,
Michele (Susan Speers), are preparing a barbecue to celebrate his 50th
birthday.  Also attending the gathering are Gussie's sons Terrence =
(Tony
Weaver), a workaholic stockbroker, and Dylan (Justin Tatum), a =
heroin-addicted
artist.  Terrence's wife and former swimsuit model, Roz (Alicia =
Rodis),
and their overactive son, Jeremy (Mark Oet), are also present, as well =
as Gussie's
mother, Grandma Betty (Linda Ryan), and sister, Gloria (Renita =
Jablonski).
When mysterious Uncle Tony (Jim Viront) is added to the mix, what seems =
to be a
typical suburban family gathering turns sinister and deadly as family =
members
are forced to wrestle with the skeletons in their closets and with each =
other.</span></font></p>
