***No Appointments are necessary. Singers will be seen on an first arrival
basis.
Where: Beck Center for the Arts
17801 Detroit Ave.
Lakewood
***Only 10 minutes from Downtown and less than 30 from most other points
east. 40 minutes from Akron. North on the McKinley exit off of I-90. Further
directions at www.beckcenter.org
Performances: PORGY AND BESS will open on Sept. 15th and close Oct. 8th,
playing Fri/Sat evenings and Sun. afternoons. There are also 2 Thursdays later in
the run.
Rehearsals: Will begin the week of August 8th. The number of rehearsals
attended weekly will be determined in part by the size of role.
About This Production: Director Scott Spence and Musical Director Stuart
Raleigh are seeking a cast of 30 to 40 black singer/actors. We are NOT looking to
perform this piece as Grand Opera, but rather, to return it to its Folk
Opera/Musical Theatre roots. While performers will need excellent vocal ability,
being an "Opera" singer is not a requirement.
Roles: All roles are open, including Porgy, Bess, Sportin' Life, Crown,
Clara, and the rest of the ensemble. There are many opportunities for vocal solo
work among many supporting roles. Strong dancers with strong voices are also
sought. The age range is predominently 17 to 65, though there will be 2 or 3
younger actors/actresses needed. No one under 10 years of age please.
Compensation: All performers 18 and over will receive a modest stipend for
their participation. It is also anticipated that 2 (two) AEA contracts will be
offered. (Guest Artist contract)
Preparation: Please prepare one brief song WITH sheet music please. An
accompanist will be provided, or you may bring your own. Pre-recorded accompaniment
is acceptable, but please provide your own CD player (battery operated).
A capella auditions are discouraged.
