    ALISON BROWN
QUARTET
  Thursday, July 13
8:00 PM
Progressive bluegrass banjoist Alison Brown made her name not only as a virtuosic instrumentalist, but as an accomplished, jazz-influenced composer, a combination that earned plenty of comparisons to Bela Fleck and David Grisman. Brown began playing the banjo before reaching her teens and developed quickly, winning numerous contests and even getting a chance to perform at the Grand Ole Opry. She was also an excellent student, and temporarily left music to attend Harvard University; following graduation, she worked as an investment banker for a couple of years, but quit to pursue music. Brown gained her first wide exposure as a member of Alison Krauss' Union Station, covering the banjo slot from Krauss' 1987 debut album through 1990. That year, she departed to record her own debut, the entirely instrumental Simple Pleasures, for Vanguard, and also spent some time as the musical director for folkie Michelle Shocked. Brown's 1992 follow-up, Twilight Motel, was jazzier and
more eclectic, and 1994's Look Left displayed her increasing interest in world and ethnic music. 1996's The Alison Brown Quartet refocused on her jazz sensibility and found her switching to guitar on a few tracks; it was also her last album before moving to the Compass imprint, for which she debuted in 1998 with Out of the Blue. 2000's Fair Weather featured a duet with Bela Fleck on "Leaving Cottondale," which won Brown a Grammy for Best Country Instrumental. Her follow-up album, Replay, was another of her jazzier outings. Brown sang about parenthood and musicianship on Stolen Moments, which arrived in spring 2005. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

    BIG LEG EMMA
  Friday, July 14
8:00 PM
To create its uniquely upbeat vibe, Big Leg Emma uses bits and pieces of bluegrass, country, folk, funk, reggae, roots rock, and everything in between. It comes together beautifully, with every song standing out as melodic, rhythmic, and precise - interspersed with looser, energetic jams.
"We all come from different backgrounds stylistically," says Charity Nuse, "but mold all those influences into one big sound with hints of jazz, blues, bluegrass, zydeco, country, reggae, pop, and funk. We enjoy being able to draw from many different backgrounds to give our fans a wide variety at our live shows. We like to give listeners something real to think about with our lyrics, something fun to dance to with our grooves, and something nice to listen to with our sounds." Western New York's Big Leg Emma was born in 2001, when long-time musical partners Steve Johnson and Charity Nuse met fiddler Amanda Barton. Amanda had been playing with her family bluegrass band since she was eight years old. To their delight, merging their contrasting styles created a fresh, fun, thoughtful blend, soaringly beautiful and downright funky. Their strengths include Amanda's exquisite fiddle, great songwriting, and extraordinary vocals, from gritty, inspirational soul to achingly sweet
 female harmonies.
With several appearances at the Kent Stage since 2004, Big Leg Emma have become a favorite of many in Northern Ohio, and central attractions at music festivals such as the Great Blue Heron. Their fan base has spread from Indiana to Vermont, and south to Kentucky, where the day after their 2006 Kent appearance they will be headlining a festival that includes the Sam Bush Band. 2005 brought a trailblazing tour to Florida, where they gained fans in both the human and mosquito populations.
They have shared the bill with the likes of Little Feat, The Wailers, Donna the Buffalo, Rusted Root front man Michael Glabicki, 10,000 Maniacs, and numerous others. Their debut studio album, The Color of Wind, has attracted unusual praise.
Big Leg Emma has experienced tremendous growth in everything from its ability to put on a superb live show to its songwriting ability, versatility, openness to experimentation, and all-around musical expression. 2006 finds them auditioning new players at lead guitar, bass, and drums. Their obvious talent and success have led extremely talented, accomplished musicians to their door. Kent has the honor of hosting one of the first shows with the new lineup, and we await the July 14 unveiling with excitement.

    HOT BUTTERED RUM
  Tuesday, July 18
8:00 PM
In the short time since Hot Buttered Rum debuted its music, dubbed as a "High Altitude Acoustic Experience," the band has been praised by fans, peers and national media alike, recognizing Hot Buttered Rum for their "stunning instrumental and vocal virtuosity." Hot Buttered Rum is attracting a truly multi-generational audience with its ability to create an undeniably hip and fresh sound that weaves together the grounded traditions of folk and bluegrass with the modern influences of rock-n-roll, reggae and acoustic singer/songwriters. Hot Buttered Rum's musical evolution has not only defined their sound, with their extensive touring schedule, the band has become established as one of the nation's hottest young touring acts since setting off as a group of friends on a trail in the high sierras in the early part of the decade to emerge as a band, appropriately named, Hot Buttered Rum.
2005 was a breakout year for Hot Buttered Rum. The band has performed at premier music festivals such as Telluride Bluegrass, Newport Folk and South By Southwest, and received an invitation to perform at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass 5. HBR's talent has led them to the stage with artists Phil Lesh, Ben Harper, Michael Franti and Spearhead, Chris Thile, Bela Fleck, Peter Rowan, Billy Nershi and Mike Marshall.

    CHAD & JEREMY
  Friday, July 21
8:00 PM
The American success of the folkish duo of Chad Stuart (b. December 10, 1943, Durham, England) and Jeremy Clyde (b. March 22, 1944, Buckinghamshire, England) pointed up the impact of the British Invasion led by the Beatles in February 1964. Chad & Jeremy charted only once in their native country, but their single "Yesterday's Gone," released in May 1964, was the first of 11 U.S. chart hits they achieved through 1966. The biggest of these, and their only Top Ten, was "A Summer Song" (July 1964). Adopting a lighter approach than many of their Merseybeat contemporaries, Chad & Jeremy focused on pop revivals such as "Willow, Weep for Me" and songs from Broadway shows, such as "I Have Dreamed" from Carousel, both Top 40 hits for them. Having moved to Hollywood, they were frequent television guests, both on music shows such as Hullabaloo and series like Batman. Their commercial progress was complicated after 1965, when they signed to Columbia Records, while Capitol Records
continued to issue their earlier recordings (previously issued on the World Artists label), such that they were forced to compete with themselves. They recorded the musically ambitious Of Cabbages and Kings (September 1967) in the wake of the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. They broke up after the commercial failure of its equally ambitious follow-up, The Ark (September 1968). Jeremy Clyde established himself as a British stage actor. The duo reunited for a new album in 1983; Of Cabbages & Kings was re-released in 1999. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide.

    LEON REDBONE
  Friday, July 28
8:00 PM
While his gravelly baritone and omnipresent fedora, dark glasses and Groucho Marx mustache made him one of the more distinct and recognizable characters in popular music, little is known about the neo-vaudeville crooner Leon Redbone. Throughout his career, he steadfastly refused to divulge any information about his background or personal life; according to legend, Redbone's desire to protect his privacy was so intense that when he was approached by the famed producer John Hammond, the contact number he gave was not his own phone, but that of a Dial-A-Joke service.
Because Redbone first emerged as a performer in Toronto during the 1970s, he was believed to be Canadian; his work, a revival of pre-World War II ragtime, jazz and blues sounds, recalled the work of performers ranging from Jelly Roll Morton and Bing Crosby to blackface star Emmett Miller. He made his recording debut in 1976 with On the Track, which featured legendary jazz violinist Joe Venuti as well as singer/songwriter Don McLean; his 1977 follow-up Double Time even reached the U.S. Top 40 charts, largely on the strength of his frequent appearances on television's "Saturday Night Live."
After 1978's Champagne Charlie, Redbone began recording only sporadically; following 1981's Branch to Branch, he waited four years before re-entering the studio to cut Red to Blue. Invariably, his albums featured guest appearances from a eclectic cast of luminaries: while 1987's Christmas Island included a cameo by Dr. John, 1994's Whistling in the Wind included duets with Ringo Starr and Merle Haggard. Despite his low profile, Redbone also earned a certain measure of fame as a fixture in various television advertising campaigns. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide
