Sam Shepard was respected as Off-Broadways most successful
counter-culture playwright before he gained national notoriety as a film
star and husband of Jessica Lang. In the tradition of Eugene ONeill,
Tennessee Williams, and Arthur Miller, Shepard probes family dynamics in
America, yet he does so with a completely original style and with a
modernist twist. Buried Child is a macabre look at an American
Midwestern family with a dark terrible secret. Mysterious, humorous, and
poetic, the work explores the inner tensions of rural existence,
father-son relationships, and the place of women in modern America.
Buried Child received the Pulitzer Prize in 1979.
