NorthEast Ohio Regional OCTAfest Presents the Best of Community Theatre
Edward Niam
Love-hate, humility-pride, kindness-anger, lust-self control
all of the 7
virtues and 7 sins were in ample supply at Around the Region in 7 Plays,
2006 presented by the Ohio Community Theatre Association, Saturday, July 8
in Hudson, Ohio. The event was held at the Barlow Community Center and
hosted by the Hudson Players Guild.
Ginny Morrison, organizer and 12 year member of the OCTA board was pleased
to welcome all in attendance to what would prove to be a very full and
satisfying day of the best of community theatre in N.E. Ohio. Ginny is also
Executive Producer and Artistic Director of the Galaxy Players.
There were 7 excerpts each 30 minutes in length in addition to a 10-minute
load in and 5-minute load out. Three responders/judges, appointed from other
regions, expressed their comments to the cast and audience immediately
following each performance.
The responders, Michael Morehead, Dee Anne Bryll and Michael Schacherbauer,
have extensive real world experience in numerous phases of theatre. The
actors listened attentively to the responders comments, which ranged form
kudos to constructive criticism with the intent to improve the quality of
each production.
The Excerpts:
Stow Players, The Sunshine Boys by Neil Simon is the story of two former
vaudeville entertainers, Al Lewis and William Clark, who performed together
for 43 years but havent spoken for the last 11. It focuses on the tension
between them when they are re-united by CBS to rehearse their signature
piece The Doctor Will See You Now.
This is not only entertaining because of the banter between the main
characters, but also for the scene where Al and Willie move the furniture in
an endless circle to prepare for their rehearsal.
Galaxy Players, Blame it on the Movies, is a delightful sampling of movie
theme songs from the 1940s to the 80s. Great choreography, music and
vocals with something for everyones taste. Excellent balance of solos and
group numbers.
Workshop Players, Jerry Finnegans Sister by Jack Neary is an enchanting and
emotional piece, which will resurrect pleasant and painful memories for
anyone who lived through the experience of a youthful romance. The
two-character play allows us to share the sometimes funny and often poignant
relationship between Beth and Brian with wonderful performances by Tricia
Schumate and Brian McNally.
Brian has loved Beth all his life but could never find the words or the
courage to tell her how he felt. Brians frustration intensifies as Beth
begins dating and he anguishes over the possibility that some guy might try
something. Beths heartfelt response to his concern was Brian, everyone
tries something. There was a natural chemistry between Beth and Brian and
you could feel their emotions as they exchanged lines.
Olde Towne Hall, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof by Tennessee Williams is, of course,
the classic Southern drama about a family that is dysfunctional in the
extreme. An elaborate set and powerful performances clearly relayed the
intensity of the interactions even for those who might be unfamiliar with
the story. Only a mother could love someone like Big Daddy and that would be
asking a lot.
Carnation City Players, Enchanted April, by Mathew Barber is a thoughtful
piece exploring the desires and fantasies of two London housewives as they
rent a villa in Italy to escape the dreariness of their marriages. A
beautiful and set and costumes added to the strong performances by all.
Chagrin Valley Little Theatre, I Love You Youre Perfect Now Change by Joe
DiPietro is a very funny, energetic and thought provoking musical looking at
the multi-faceted nature of human relationships. There were times when the
laughter from the audience was so loud it was difficult to hear the lines.
The breakfast scene was an absolute classic that anyone in a long-term
marriage (5 years or more) could relate to. The driving scene along with
strong acting and vocals adds to the quality of this piece.
Trumble New Theatre, Over the River and Through the Woods by Joe DiPietro
focuses on Nick, a single Italian American guy from New Jersey and his
relationship with his grandparents after his parents move to Florida. The
Trivial Pursuit game and dinner scene will stir the memories of anyone who
spent time with their own grandparents. And for those who didnt, it will
tell you things you never knew.
The banquet, held at the Hudson Holiday Inn with nearly 80 in attendance,
was an energetic and entertaining affair. You could feel the enthusiasm and
creativity of so many theatre people gathered into one room. Following
dinner was the Dry T Shirt contest and the presentation of awards.
The big winners are Workshop Players, Jerry Finnegans Sister and Chagrin
Valley Little Theatre, I Love You Youre Perfect Now Change. The alternate
is Trumbull New Theatre, Over the River and Through the Woods.
The 2 winners will compete in the 2006 Ohio Community Theatre Associations
annual conference, Around the World in Eighty Plays to be held in
Columbus, Ohio, September 1-4. The annual OCTA Conference is a 3-day weekend
beginning Friday night with the International Affair, Saturday commences
with the excerpts, and Sunday brings more excerpts and the annual banquet,
which includes a costume ball. The event finishes Monday with the awards
brunch.
