  CLEVELAND JEWISH NEWS
Yes! to ‘Sunday in the Park' at Lakeland

The first thing the eye fastens on is the glorious color.
Vivid splotches of red, green, orange, blue and yellow illuminate the entire stage like a huge canvas dipped in paint.
What a perfect opening for "Sunday in the Park with George,” the 1984 Pulitzer Prize-winning musical by Stephen Sondheim (music and lyrics) and James Lapine (book) about the making of an artist and his art.
In the imaginative production at Lakeland Theatre through July 30, Martin E. Friedman and company have created a solid work of art of their own.
The lion's share of the credit belongs to Lakeland artistic director Friedman, whose vision, passion and intelligence are reflected throughout the memorable show. Add an ace design team and a well-directed, highly motivated cast, and you have a commendable likeness that does ample justice to the original musical.
Yes, some of the individual voices are weak, most noticeably in the solo numbers, but as an ensemble of 16 actors, only one of whom is Actor's Equity, they acquit themselves extremely well.
Fiendishly difficult melodies, tongue-twisting lyrics, and complex ideas make "Sunday...” a challenge.
Ah, but the rewards are many for those who respond with both mind and heart.
The musical was inspired by post-Impressionist French artist Georges Seurat and his best-known painting, "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.” The painting is composed of thousands of tiny brushstrokes, in which Seurat, the founder of pointillism, applies scientific principles to the use of color.
The painting, currently hanging at the Art Institute in Chicago, depicts a group of working-class Parisians enjoying their day off on an island in the Seine near Paris.
The first act centers on the development of the painting in which the subjects of the painting interact with each other and the artist.
The most prominent person in the painting is Dot, George's model and mistress. As Dot, Amiee Collier is also the centerpiece of the production. Her exceptionally strong voice overpowers the others and jumpstarts the show on a very high note. Collier shows

astonishing range and vocal agility in the demanding titular opening number and also proves every bit the comic actress. When George admonishes, "Don't move your mouth,” Dot freezes hers in a rounded "0.”
Andrew Tarr looks and acts the part of the intense and emotionally distant artist George. His singing voice is only fair, however, diminishing his solo numbers. Tarr fares better in his duets with Dot, such as "Color and Light.” While Dot primps at her vanity for a date with George, George feverishly paints behind the scrim of his unfinished painting.
Jules (Don Irven), a rival artist, and his mousy wife Yvonne (Christine DelZoppo) reject Seurat's technique and painting outright. Eleven-year-old Equity actor Emma Wahl has amazing stage presence as their bratty daughter Louise.
Beachwood High School graduate Emily Baron percolates as Celeste #1 and Kelly Pekar is Celeste #2, the two young girls vying for the soldier's attention.
Mary Jane Nottage is extremely funny as the crotchety Old Lady who turns out to be George's mother. Though not a polished singer, Nottage comes through with flying colors in the poignant duet "Beautiful” with George.
Design, order, composition, light and harmony form George's philosophy as a painter. The many freeze frames in which all the action comes to an abrupt stop to create the effect of the painting are extremely well synchronized and hugely impressive.
The act of building up the painting is intrinsic to the production. Keith Nagy's set creates the background of the painting, while his lighting, both pinpointed and dappled, sharply defines the changes in the work-in-progress as they take place.
The shorter and less satisfying second act, fast forwards 100 years in which George's fictional great-grandson, also an artist named George, struggles with what it means to make art in the contemporary world. Like his great-grandfather, this inventor and sculptor introduces new concepts that are not readily accepted by the public.
The setting is a museum where George is presenting his latest laser sculpture to a skeptical audience. All the actors in the first act assume roles in the second, as patrons, art critics, technicians and other assorted museum and public officials.
"Art isn't easy,” laments George (Tarr) in "Putting It Together,” a cleverly ironic number which underscores the challenges of being an artist today. "Moving On,” another gorgeous melody, is the advice George's 98-year-old grandmother Marie (Collier) gives him about how to do precisely just that.
While the musical is ostensibly about the two Georges, it is every inch a story about Sondheim and his own efforts to create something new and entirely his own.
This is a production bursting with heart. See for yourself.
