I received this via email and would like to share this with everyone who
might be interested

On Thursday night, August 17, an act of senseless violence took the life
of
Professor Masumi Hayashi, artist, teacher, colleague, and friend of the
faculty,
staff and students of Cleveland State University, the arts community in
northeast Ohio, and the worldwide community of artists.

Masumi joined the faculty as Assistant Professor of Photography in 1982
and has
been a full professor since 1996. During her tenure at CSU Masumi
received
numerous awards, including an Arts Midwest, NEA fellowship in 1987, a
Civil
Liberties Educational Fund research fellowship in 1997, a Fulbright
Grant in
2003, and Individual Artist Fellowships from the Ohio Arts Council on
three
different occasions. She was awarded the Cleveland Arts Prize for Visual
Arts
in 1994.

An internationally recognized and respected artist, Masumi's works are
represented in numerous public collections, including the Tokyo
Metropolitan
Museum of Photography, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Cleveland
Museum of
Art, the International Museum of Photography at George Eastman House in
Rochester, the Columbus Museum of Art, the Victoria & Albert Museum in
London,
and the Ludwig Art Museum in Koblenz, Germany. A more detailed account
of her
accomplishments and an online gallery of her work can be found at
http://www.masumimuseum.com.

Friends of the family are invited to visit with them between 3:00 p.m.
and 6:00
p.m. on Thursday, August 24, or between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on
Friday,
August 25, at 2375 Tudor Dr., Cleveland Heights.

A memorial service will take place at the Beck Center, 17801 Detroit
Ave., on
Saturday, August 26, at 4:00 p.m. It is intended to be a celebration of
Masumi's life and accomplishments, and will give friends an opportunity
to share
personal stories and memories they have of her.

A subsequent commemoration of Masumi's life will take place on the
campus of
Cleveland State University, at a time and location yet to be determined.

As we mourn her loss, we should all celebrate her life and spirit.
