The Duhks

The Kent Stage, 175 E Main St, Kent, OH 44240, 330-677-5005

www.ticketweb.com or www.kentstage.org Doors open one hour before event
time. There is FREE parking behind the theater and on all city streets.
.If you have any questions, please call 330-677-5005.=20

>From the Kent Stage website: The Duhks (pronounced "ducks") is an =
unusual
name for a band. But, this is an unusual band. This fivesome from =
Winnipeg,
Manitoba, defies classification. The band was the brainchild of banjoist
Leonard Podolak, whose father Mitch founded the Winnipeg Folk Festival.
Podolak compiled the band after the break-up of his previous band Scruj
MacDuhk. Recruiting the best musicians, the Duhks formed: soul singer =
and
lead vocalist Jessica Havey, Cuban-inflected percussionist Scott Senior,
Canadian Scots-Metis fiddler Tania Elizabeth, and Celtic guitarist =
Jordan
McConnell. The band plays a sometimes high-energy blend of Appalachian
old-time string band, Irish fiddle tunes, and kick-ass rock/folk fusion.
Other times they are playing delicate finger-picked traditional
instrumentals. The Duhks defy easy categorization. Fans and =
acquaintances
have used phrases like "Blue Rodeo meets Celtic rock," "progressive
soulgrass" and "Destiny's Child meets the Chieftains" to describe the
Canadian band. "I think what we really play is good music, music that we
like," says Leonard Podolak, the clawhammer banjo player who put =
together
the band from Winnipeg, Manitoba. "The music comes from all of us... you
can't really describe it in a category." Indeed, The Duhks take Celtic,
French Canadian and old-timey music and punch it up with shades of blues =
and
soul and driving Afro-Cuban beats. Percussionist Scott Senior says the =
band
hopes to broaden folk music: "I think the idea that this band is trying =
to
get across is that folk music is not just a person sitting there singing =
a
song with a guitar. That might have been the root of it, but where folk
music can be taken is kind of up to us. It's coming together and showing =
the
people that, yea, we do know where our music comes from, but this is =
where
we're taking it."

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 7:00 to 9:00 pm; and =
Sundays
from 1:00 to 5:00 pm.

The book Growing Season: The Life of a Migrant Community,
written by authors Gary Harwood and David Hassler, has been chosen as =
the
text for the latest Stark County =93One Book, One Community=94 =
initiative.
(Editor=92s Note: Please see the Square Peg Promotions arts calendar for =
the
dates of other exhibits, workshops, and public discussions revolving =
around
this text. Check with your local branch library, and visit the Mayor=92s
Literacy Commission website at www.cantonmlc.org =
<http://www.cantonmlc.org/>
for other events, too.)

In Hartville, Ohio, a community of migrant workers returns =
year
after year to work a black-muck vegetable farm owned by the Zellers =
family.
This original photo exhibition puts a human face on the migrant =
community as
well as recognizes the Hartville Migrant Ministries and the dedicated
volunteers who work to improve the conditions for the migrants. The
exhibition offers an intimate portrait of this largely Latino migrant
community and a way of life that is rarely seen, or understood, by =
people
outside this tightly knit circle. The exhibition will present fifty =
images
and the text of their related stories in the CMA galleries.=20

The exhibition coincides with the September 2006 publishing =
of
the 192-page book, Growing Season: The Life of a Migrant Community, by =
Kent
State University Press. Photographer Gary Harwood and writer David =
Hassler
have worked closely with the people of this community over several years =
to
document the challenges and joys of their daily lives. When photographer
Gary Harwood first received permission to photograph the migrant workers =
at
the K. W. Zellers and Son, Inc., family farm in Hartville, Ohio, during =
the
summer of 2001, he anticipated that he would be documenting hardship.
Migrant workers continually face difficult conditions while trying to
support themselves and their families. Farm work is physical, hot, and
dirty. The days in the fields are long and exhausting. Growers can be =
brutal
employers, and there is no shortage of documented cases of terrible =
living
and working conditions.

In Hartville, however, Gary found a different story. Here =
the
workers and their families live in a strong, tightly knit community
supported by the Hartville Migrant Center and many caring neighbors. =
About
70 percent of the workers return annually to this small northeastern =
Ohio
town where they have established solid friendships and stable lives.

Over the next four growing seasons, Gary came to know and =
gain
the trust of these Mexican American and Mexican migrant families who =
travel
each year to Ohio from the southern United States and Mexico. From the
beginning he displayed his photographs on the walls of the Migrant =
Center so
that the entire community of more than 300 workers and their families =
could
see what he found to be special and captivating about their lives. =
Though
his work began with field photos, over time he focused more on family
pictures, as he was invited to photograph baptisms, first communions,
weddings, birthday parties, and private family events.

In 2004 writer David Hassler began collaborating with Gary =
on
this documentary project. That spring, when the workers returned to the
farm, David began interviewing the migrants as well as community members =
and
volunteers at the Center. Working from the transcripts of his =
interviews,
David wrote first-person narratives that speak with the voices of the =
people
themselves. [Three narratives are included with this release]

musicians, the Duhks formed: soul singer and lead vocalist Jessica =

Cuban-inflected percussionist Scott Senior, Canadian Scots-Metis fiddler =
Tania

sometimes
high-energy blend of Appalachian old-time string band, Irish fiddle =

kick-ass rock/folk fusion. Other times they are playing delicate =
finger-picked
traditional instrumentals. The Duhks defy easy categorization. Fans and
acquaintances have used phrases like "Blue Rodeo meets Celtic =

"progressive soulgrass" and "Destiny's Child meets the

it up with shades of blues and soul and driving Afro-Cuban beats. =
Percussionist
Scott Senior says the band hopes to broaden folk music: "I think =

that this band is trying to get across is that folk music is not just a =

sitting there singing a song with a guitar. That might have been the =
