Lakewood, OH - The Beck Center for the Arts and INSIDE World Music come =
together to bring you a season of rich and breathtaking world music =
concerts. Our 2006-2007 season begins with the Carpathian Folk Quartet =
live in concert on the Beck Center's Mackey Main Stage on Sunday, =
October 1 at 7:00 p.m. =20

Leading the group, Roma (Gypsy) virtuosi cimbalom player S=E1ndor Kuti =
and violinist Attila Jakab collaborate to present a program of the best =
of folk and Gypsy music from Hungary and Romania. A product of the =
virtuoso traditions of the Budapest Gypsies, S=E1ndor Kuti early on =
became interested in other music as well, including Balkan, Klezmer, and =
village traditions, all of which he incorporates into his music. Attila =
Jakab brings to the mix his years of experience as a prim=E1s (violinist =
bandleader) playing for the Hungarian, Romanian and Roma (Gypsy) =
communities in his native Transylvania. Drawing from these rich =
sources, together they produce a varied and breathtaking concert. (More =
about the artists below.)

Don't miss the Carpathian Folk Quartet and their unforgettable =
performance! Advance tickets are available for $17 for adults and $12 =
for students ($20 at the door). To order tickets or for more =
information regarding this concert series or other events at the Beck =
Center, call the Box Office at 216-521-2540. The Beck Center for the =
Arts is located just 10 minutes west of downtown Cleveland at 17801 =
Detroit Avenue in Lakewood.

The Beck Center is very excited about partnering with INSIDE World Music =
and its founder, Walt Mahovlich. A specialist in the music of Eastern =
Europe and the Balkans, Mahovlich has been performing with East European =
musical groups since 1971 and actively involved in cultural programming =
and folklore research since 1977. He has independently sponsored and =
curated the successful and continuing INSIDE World Music series bringing =
world music events to Cleveland since 1999. Originally based in Tremont =
under the name "World Music at INSIDE," the series has focused on =
bringing a cultural participation aspect to its audiences through dance =
parties and workshops in addition to its concerts; striving to provide =
the audience with an insider's experience of the music and its culture. =
Over the years, INSIDE World Music has featured musicians from Hungary, =
Russia, Ukraine, Slovakia, Romania, Serbia, Croatia, Macedonia, Turkey, =
The Republic of Georgia and India, as well as Klezmer, world music =
fusion, and world music influenced jazz groups. In 2006, Mahovlich =
served as artistic director of Resonance: A World Music Festival that =
brought ten groups from Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Africa and South =
America to Cleveland for a two-day festival that featured performances, =
workshops and participatory dance events.

The Beck Center for the Arts is one of the area's largest =
performing arts organizations and the only institution of its kind on =
Cleveland's Westside. Each year, the Beck Center provides professional =
theater performances and high-quality arts education programs for =
thousands of patrons throughout Northeast Ohio. Programming includes a =
professional theater performing on two stages; an arts education program =
with instruction in dance, music, theater, and visual arts; a Creative =
Arts Therapies program, an Outreach Education program, an Early =
Childhood program, and art gallery exhibits in three on-campus =
locations. For more information regarding the Beck Center for the Arts, =

About the Artists: About the Artists The Carpathian Folk Quartet

=20

S=E1ndor Kuti [cimbalom] From a famous dynasty of Gyspy musicians, =
cimbalom virtuoso S=E1ndor Kuti is a remarkable representative of the =
younger generation of Roma musicians from Budapest. His instrument, the =
cimbalom, is the 125 stringed hammered dulcimer of Central and Eastern =
Europe. He became a member of the world renowned RAJK=D3 Orchestra at =
the age of 14 and has played with virtually of the famous Hungarian =
prim=E1s violinists, including all of the Lakatos dynasty, S=E1ndor =
J=E1roka, K=E1roly Puka, and Ern=F5 K=E1llai Kiss.  S=E1ndor was also =
attracted to music of the Balkans and other areas of Eastern Europe. A =
well-rounded Gypsy musician true to his generation, he's toured =
frequently with the K=E1lm=E1n Balogh Gypsy Cimbalom Band, played =
classical music with the Budapest Festival Orchestra, Klezmer music with =
Budowitz, and also tours with his own band in Europe, the Gypsy =
Brothers.

=20

Attila Jakab [violin] As much at home in Hungarian as Romanian folk =
music, Attila Jakab is one of Transylvania's most talented folk =
musicians. Growing up he learned from the authentic village musicians =
and spent his youth playing at weddings for the Hungarian, Romanian and =
Roma (Gypsy) communities. He is the lead violinist - prim=E1s - of the =
Maros Ensemble, the professional Hungarian folk group from =
Marosv=E1s=E1rhely [Tirgu Mures], Transylvania. Attila has toured in =
many countries around the world, including Western Europe, Japan and in =
North America. His superb technique and warm personality mesmerized =
American audiences during the 2004 tour of the Gypsy Spirit, Journey of =
the Roma show.=20

=20

L=E1szl=F3 Mester [br=E1csa - folk-viola] is one of the most respected =
br=E1csa players on the Hungarian folk music scene. A classical trained =
violinist, he was attracted to folk music at an early age and sought out =
and learned from the masters of traditional folk music. Subsequently he =
has played and toured with most of Hungary's leading folk groups, =
including the =D6kr=F6s Ensemble, with great success.,=20

=20

Robert Do=F3r [folk-bass] was initiated to music through jazz. However =
once he discovered folk music, it became his passion. He is considered =
one of the best bass players in Hungary folk music circles. Currently a =
member of the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble, Robert has played and =
toured with many most important folk musicians in Hungary including the =
world renowned =D6kr=F6s Ensemble.
