Red Hen Urges Voters To See "The Fighting Days"
CLEVELAND, OH, September 23, 2006: In recognition of upcoming elections,
Red Hen Productions presents a staged reading of The Fighting Days, the life
story of Francis Marion Beynon, a Canadian journalist and political activist
who spearheaded the Votes-for-Women movement during the early 1900's. The
Fighting Days, written by Wendy Lill, will be performed on October 12, 13,
15, 19, 20, and 22nd, at 7:30 pm. All shows will be held downtown at the
Cleveland Arts Theater (located next to the Old Euclid Tavern),11619-23
Euclid Avenue. Call 216-556-0910 for reservations. Seating is limited.
The Fighting Days focuses on the life and work of Beynon's political
activities during 1910- 1917 as she became a prominent voice for the rights
of rural women, working for improved divorce, child custody, the Votes - for
- Women movement and other important issues of the day. As Canada became
involved in WWI, Beynon's defense of foreigners' right to vote divided the
suffragists: should all women have the vote or just Dominion - born women
who are sending their husbands and sons off to battle? This is a play about
the polarities of public and private lives, and about issues of racism and
pacifism within the women's movement, The Fighting Days deals with timeless
moral concerns. Francis Marion Benyon gave us everything for her beliefs
and one can only hope the world's a better place for it.
Please note: On Thursday the 19th, Red Hen is proud to participate in
Cleveland's Free Night of Theater. As part of an on-going effort make live
theater available to all, Red Hen (along with 14 other theaters in Northeast
Ohio) will offer free seats to new patrons. Red Hen will offer 10 seats
