"LIVE AND BECOME"

2005 (PG-13) 153 min. Israel/France/subtitles
Director: Radu Mihaileanu
Cast: Sirak M. Sabahat, Yael Abecassis, Roschdy Zem

An ambitious, intelligent and often very moving French-Israeli drama
that won audience awards at festivals in Vancouver and Berlin, "LIVE AND
BECOME" is based on a real event that took place during the African
famine of 1984. Officials in the United States and Israel engineered
the rescue of the Beta Israel community - a group of Ethiopian Jews
known to other Africans as Falasha, or ''outsiders'' - who had fled with
other desperate Africans to refugee camps in Sudan. In what became
known as Operation Moses, thousands were airlifted to the Promised Land.
The hero of "LIVE AND BECOME" is not supposed to be one of them. A
9-year-old Ethiopian boy is given a chance for a better life when his
Christian mother urges him to pose as the child of an ailing Beta Israel
woman, sending him off with the words, "Go! Live and become!" After
arriving safely in Israel, the boy is henceforth known as Schlomo. As
played by three different actors, the young refugee makes a very
eventful journey to adulthood. After the death of his protector makes
Schlomo an orphan in the eyes of the Israelis, he is adopted by a French
Sephardi family in Tel Aviv. His beautiful new mother becomes his
fiercest protector, especially when the parents of students at his
school raise objections to the boy's presence, fearing AIDS and "African
diseases." The racial strife worsens when other Israelis publicly air
their doubts about the Jewishness of the Ethiopians. The irony, of
course, is that Schlomo isn't Jewish at all. Terrified that his secret
will be revealed and he will be deported, he doesn't help matters when
he tries to explain to a rabbi how Jesus was the founder of his
religion. He also longs to see his real mother again and begins
covertly writing letters to her with the help of a Beta Israel elder.
While complex questions about race and religion are at the core of "LIVE
AND BECOME", director Radu Mihaileanu explores a wide range of other
issues with admirable efficiency. In short, precise scenes, the film
exposes the conflicted feelings of left-wingers like Schlomo's adoptive
father about Israel's forced military service, as well as how the hopes
of those in the country's peace movement were dashed by the
assassination of Yitzhak Rabin. This film is a valuable reminder that
dramatic news events like the rescue of the Beta Israel never constitute
the whole story. As Schlomo cries in a moment of anger and frustration,
"We were simply extras in Operation Moses!" The difficult business of
living and becoming must continue long after the original events stop
generating headlines.

"A compelling example of a work that exposes universal themes by
closely examining the story of one life, LIVE AND BECOME is remarkable
for its humanity, vitality and emotional power." - Jason Anderson, GLOBE
AND MAIL

While you're here to see LIVE AND BECOME, don't miss the Artists
Reception for
Honey Lazar:
The Portable Universe - Photography
now in the Beth K. Stocker Art Gallery through Wednesday, October 18,
2006
The Artists Reception runs from 6:00-8:00p.m. on Friday, September 29th,
and is FREE

Photographs by Honey Lazar reflect women's lives by focusing on the
"portable universe of things" women carry with them as they make their
way through their worlds, from cradle to grave. According to the
artist, "From the time women are born until the time we die, we rarely
leave the house empty-handed. We may clutch a doll, drag a blanket,
hoist a backpack, haul a laundry sack or groceries, sling a purse, or
stuff things into our pockets and bras. We pack a "portable universe of
things." Women photographed represent a cross-section of society and are
photographed in the artist's studio as well as at county fairs,
Laundromats, and on the streets of Oaxaca, Berlin, and Prague.

The Beth K. Stocker Art Gallery is open when exhibitions are on display
Mondays through Fridays from 10:30a.m. to 2:30p.m. - also open before,
