Panel Discussion on Growing Season: The Life of a Migrant Community

Massillon Public Library Auditorium, 208 Lincoln Way East, downtown
Massillon=20

The Massillon Public Library, together with the Massillon Commission to
Advance Literacy and the Mayor's Literacy Commission of Canton, will =
present
a panel discussion on the book, The Growing Season by Gary Harwood and =
David
Hassler. =20

Moderator for the evening is Judy Kenny, Title I Coordinator of the
Massillon City Schools. Panel members include Jonathan Sorenson, Social
Studies teacher with the Massillon City Schools; Marilyn Frazier, =
Housing
Director for the City of Massillon; and Nazario Mendoza, Computer
Instructor/Interpreter of the Centro San Jose, an organization in =
Canton,
Ohio, which provides services for Stark County's migrant community. A
special guest panelist will be a migrant worker, Ismael, from the local
area.  =20

Panel members will begin the program by discussing their impressions of =
The
Growing Season, which chronicles life in the particular migrant =
community
which works on the Zellers=92 Produce farm of Hartville, Ohio. The =
workers,
who are mostly of Mexican descent, come to Hartville each season with =
their
families and live as a vibrant community in housing provided by the =
Zeller
family on their farm. Following the panel's comments on the book, the
audience is invited into open discussion with the panelists about their =
own
impressions of the story of this thriving, productive community who =
remain
mostly invisible to Stark Countians.

Copies of The Growing Season may be purchased at The Massillon Public
Library, the Massillon Senior Center, and The Independent for $12, or =
they
may be borrowed from the library's collection. Many school classes in
Massillon and Canton are incorporating the book into their studies. The
book is beautifully illustrated with numerous color photos taken in
Hartville. The text is a series of stories about life in Hartville for
these industrious people and the area organizations that work with them
during the growing season and harvest.

The program is free and no registration is required. It is one of many
being offered during September and October in the second annual ONE =
BOOK/ONE
COMMUNITY series. The library is located at or log onto our website at

Call for Writers: A Cup of Comfort for Single Mothers

A Cup of Comfort is a best-selling anthology (book) series featuring
inspiring true stories about the extraordinary experiences of =
=93ordinary=94
people. They=92re now actively seeking submissions for the following new
volumes: =20

A Cup of Comfort for Single Mothers Now through December 31st

As Oprah Winfrey has often said, parenting is the most difficult and
important job in the world. It can be even tougher for single mothers, =
who
face all the usual parenting challenges plus another whole set of unique
ones. But single motherhood also brings many untold rewards, for both =
moms
and children. For this collection of personal essays celebrating single
mothers, we seek uplifting true stories about the joys and the =
difficulties
of single mothering. The majority of stories selected for publication =
will
be written from the single mother=92s point of view, but we will also =
consider
stories written by the children of single mothers as well as by third
parties with intimate knowledge of (and the permission of) the single =
mother
and her child(ren). Possible themes include but are not limited to: =
Juggling
the myriad responsibilities of single motherhood ; Raising sons or =
daughters
without fathers; The support of family, friends, other mothers ; Hard
lessons learned; Busting myths about single mothering ; Defying =
stereotypes
about single moms and/or children of single moms; Overcoming adversity ;
Self-acceptance and self-respect in a society that sometimes disparages
single mothers; Unconventional wisdoms gained; Blessings, joys, and =
rewards
of being a single mother or the child of a single mother; The unique =
bond
between a single mother and her child(ren); The courage, resilience,
ingenuity, devotion, accomplishments, and/or integrity of a single mom; =
Why
you chose single motherhood (if applicable) and how you=92ve made it =
work; The
unexpected and/or under-recognized advantages, joys, and/or rewards of =
being
a single mother or having a single mother. Submission Deadline: December =
31,
2006*

*Because stories are reviewed and semifinalists are selected throughout =
the
submission period, early submission is strongly encouraged. Writers=92 =
and
Submission Guidelines are detailed and too extensive to list in this
newsletter, so please direct questions and suggestions to:

for many of the artists involved, =93Adaptations=94 will showcase an =
eclectic
mix of artifacts -- some rarely or never before on view -- alongside =
new
artwork in a variety of media. The ten artists selected for this =
project --
some seasoned, some aspiring -- are current or former Ohio residents. =
The
artists were selected based on their individual talents and the =
disparity of

the
gallery during the course of the exhibition. Directed by Museum =
Archivist
Mandy Altimus, the film will take viewers into the artists=92 studios =
and
working environments during the process of this commission. Audiences =
will,
therefore, witness not only the source of inspiration and finished =
product,
but will be able to experience something of the creative process =
involved in
adapting these artifacts. A DVD of the documentary will be included in =
the
exhibition catalog, a 28-page color booklet highlighting the Museum =
objects,
the artists, and the =93Adaptations=94 works of art.
The exhibition opening, which will be held on Saturday, August 19, from =
7:00
to 9:00 p.m., is free and open to the public. Participating artists =

learned; Busting
myths about single mothering ; Defying stereotypes about single moms =
