One of America's most well-loved musicals, Cabaret is based on I am a
Camera, a play by John van Druten, which was inspired by Christopher
Isherwood's Goodbye to Berlin. Cabaret paints a vivid picture of the
"divine decadence" and fearful hatred in the shape of rising fascism in
Germany in the 1930s.

Adapted by Joe Masteroff and set to music by John Kander and Fred Ebb,
who later wrote the lyrics and scores for such musicals as Chicago and
Kiss of the Spider Woman, Cabaret won eight Tony Awards, including Best
Musical of the 1966-67 season. =20

In 1972, Liza Minnelli and Cleveland native Joel Grey received Oscars
for their performances in the film version of the musical, which also
won a Best Director award for famed choreographer Bob Fosse.

The UA production will be directed by faculty member Susan Speers,
choreographed by MaryAnn Black and will feature scene designs by faculty
member Adel Migid and costume designs by Justin Verdin. The role of the
Master of Ceremonies will be played by Akron resident Ryan McMullen and
the role of Sally Bowles will be played by UA student Amanda Christine
Purlaky.
