  Navtej Johar is a Bharatanatyam exponent and a choreographer, whose work is unique in that it freely traverses between the traditional and the avant-garde. 

Performer: Trained in Bharatanatyam at Rukmini Arundale's, Kalakshetra, at Chennai, and with Leela Samson at the Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra, New Delhi, he later studied at the Department of Performance Studies, New York University. Johar has performed at prestigious venues all over the world and has done extensive work with several prominent international companies and choreographers, including The Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Co., The Chandralekha Group, Leela Samson's, Peter Sparling, Yoshiko Chuma, Alan Lommasson, John Shack, Justin McCarthy, Janet Lilly, Keith Khan, Muzaffar Ali, Anna Birch and the New York City Opera. He has collaborated with composers Stephen Rush, Shubha Mudgal, as well as installation artist Sheeba Chachi; and has also acted in films by Deepa Mehta and Sabiha Sumar. 

Choreographer: Johar is recognized as a cutting edge choreographer whose work is sensitive, compelling, witty and layered. His work includes solo and ensemble works. Apart from classical Bharatanatyam it includes contemporary performance pieces, street-theatre, performance-installations, site-specific events, spectacles, musicals and fashion shows. A recipient of the Times of India Fellowship, 1995, and the Charles Wallace Fellowship, 1999, Johar was the performance director of the Commonwealth Parade, for the Queen's Golden Jubilee Celebrations, at London, in June 2002. 

Yoga Exponent: A long time student and practitioner of yoga, Johar trained in Patanjali yoga at the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram, Chennai, under the guidance of Sri T.K.V. Desikachar. He has been a yoga teacher since 1985 and now runs his own studio, Studio Abhyas, at New Delhi. His approach is fluid and adaptable as he freely merges asana, pranayama, visualization, mediation and Vedic chanting.
  Navtej Johar offers a yoga workshop either in one comprehensive 18-hour weekend-intensive or through shorter modules that will focus on the various elements (one element in the case of short modules) that make up yoga practice in the tradition of Sri T. Krishnamacharya and Sri T.K.V. Desikachar: these elements being asana, pranayama, meditation, Vedic chanting, and a study of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras. According to Sri Krishnamacharya, every breath during yoga practice that is not infused with focus is a wasted breath. Key concepts that form the basis of this tradition will be underlined and reinforced through both didactic and experiential techniques, the primary focus being on refining breath and to make it an effective and mindful medium of contemplation, self-enquiry or prayer. 
  Asana: The asana section will comprise of underlining and illustrating some key concepts based on the Yoga Sutras followed by a practice of various asana-adaptations designed to both limber and strengthen the spine and evenly release and absorb the flow of prana within the body. The use of breath in asana is crucial and a distinctive feature of this style, the workshop will include different methods of regulating breath in asana in order to affect different outcomes depending upon the teacher/student goal: moving into postures in stages, using breath to deepen postures, and repetition of postures.
  Pranayama: In addition to the use of breath in asana, an in-depth, experiential practice of various yogic breathing techniques will be included, beginning with refining the primary ujjayi-chest-breathing. With the aim to keep the mind focused and alert during pranayama practice, the concept of "mental-gymnastics"—as Desikachar calls it—based on principles of desa (location of breath in the body), kala and sankhya (the system of mental-arithmetic) applicable in yogic breathing will be illustrated and practiced.
  Meditation: The breath links the body to the mind and is the key instrument in calming the mind. Thus meditation is viewed as breath-meditation which first engages and steadies the mind and then becomes an exercise in sustained attention upon a chosen object of enquiry or contemplation. It necessarily engages memory and intelligence and is a result of a vitalized, alert body; a sharp enquiring mind and a heart that is open and flowing with feeling or bhavana. An Indian classical dancer himself, Johar freely uses imagery that helps involve the heart. The participants may also be required to personally define their respective focus, perhaps even author their own prayers or affirmations which will then be placed within a grid of mindfulness through guided pranayama. 
  Vedic Chanting: The use of sound is advocated by Krishnamacharya as one powerful tool of practice. Chanting requires the simultaneous involvement of body, breath, hearing, voice and word/affirmation. The loop between the ear, the mind that cognizes the sound, and the voice-box that reproduces the sound is a significant circuit in the body-mind and attributes to the lengthening of attention span and quiet mindfulness. The workshop will introduce the basic principles of Vedic chanting which make it unique and lend to mantra-power through explanations of purpose, techniques and application.
  Yoga Sutras: The workshop will also include chanting and comment on some key Yoga Sutras as a source of inspiration, insight and instruction. The aim of the workshop is to help demystify and personalize these principles so as to make them accessible and applicable today and to make yoga into an intelligent, simple, practical, common-sense and intuitive practice.
