It seems all city's a stage for the Bard

by Tony Brown

It was all Bard all the time over the weekend in Cleveland- on-Cuyahoga,
with three professional theaters opening Shakespeare plays. These plays
tickle our funny bones, stir our souls, titillate our titillations and
demonstrate why a 400-year-old dead guy lives on as our dearest playwright.

Together, they allowed the city's theater community to flex its collective
muscle...

...In "M4M" at Cleveland Public Theatre, the gritty urban venue, director
Craig George makes the sexual politics of "Measure for Measure" as immediate
as headlines about disgraced Rep. Mark Foley. Cleveland Public Theatre's
"M4M," in which six male actors play all roles, male and female, broods as
intensely as "Love's Labour's" froths yet also brings a few knowing
chuckles.

About a public official who mercilessly cracks down on sex offenses and
then gets caught in a sex scandal (a la Foley), "Measure for Measure"
remains a difficult work, one of the most problematic of Shakespeare's
"problem plays," comedies with serious intent. But director George seizes
the challenges by the throat, configuring the Public's Levin Theatre like a
tennis court, with the audience on opposite sides of a long, broad runway. A
simple white sheet and a few furniture pieces and dangling props serve as
his set.

The all-male cast builds on Shakespeare's latent homo-eroticism (men played
all the roles in his day, too), and the doubling (and tripling and
quadrupling) of roles adds depth and a comic dash as the actors throw off
one set of clothes and don another.

And George alternates throbbing techno music with ethereal chanting to
create appropriate ambiguity.

There are too many absolutely profound and slyly hilarious moments to
recount here, but mention must be made of the towering, gutty performance by
Michael Mauldin (newly appointed theater director at Cleveland State) as the
Duke.

With economy and majesty, Mauldin commands the stage with as much wisdom and
passion as the Duke must summon to set things more or less aright.

It's a sexy and thought-provoking experience, this "M4M." If you have time
and money for only one of these Shakespeare offerings, this is the one you
must see.
