One sunny evening, a ten-year-old girl disappears and is never seen alive again. Her mother, Nancy (Laurel Johnson), withdraws from the world, unable to cope with the emotions surrounding her daughter's disappearance; she is frozen in time. Agnetha (Kate Duffield), an American academic, comes to England to research her dissertation entitled "Serial Killing: A Forgivable Act?" Agnetha's research leads her to the prison where Ralph (Sean Derry) is detained, a man still coldly detached despite the degree of his crimes. Drawn together by hideous and tragic circumstances, the three set out on a long, dark journey, at the end of which, a glimmer of hope and closure may exist. Angry yet, compassionate, Frozen is an exceptional play that interweaves the lives of a murderer, the mother of one of his victims, and his psychologist to delve into our capacity for forgiveness, remorse, and change after an act that would seem to rule them out.
Directed by Sean McConaha, Frozen is an award-winning play that was first produced at Birmingham Repertory Theatre in 1998, and revived at the Cottesloe Theatre at the Royal National Theatre, London, in 2002. Frozen opened in New York at the MCC Theatre in February 2004, and transferred to Broadway at the Circle in the Square Theatre in May of 2004.
