Hamlet
Through October 22
Beck Center for the Arts
Studio Theater
Directed by David Hansen
Featuring Sarah Morton as Hamlet

"Sarah Morton gives an outstandingly nuanced performance...George Roth
does a fine job...Well done...Don McBride's set is ingenious...The
performances are terrific...See it for yourself: it's worth the trip."
~ Marcus Bales, Cool Cleveland
=20
"(Director) Hansen is experienced and demonstrably astute, there are no
embarrassments here and much to appreciate...Sarah Morton is a palpably
enchanting stage presence - smart, wry, covertly vulnerable and
hesitantly self-confident...In sum, a moderately intriguing conceit,
ably cast and executed, made into a catchable occasion by our homegrown
Divine Sarah."
~ James Damico, Free Times
=20
"Beck's production is effective...creative and bold...Don McBride's
set...works well to create this interpretation of the script...The
dumb-show segments were creatively choreographed by Alison
Garrigan...the fights...were well developed by Joshua Brown and Kelly
Elliott...Nicholas Koesters was excellent as Horatio. He created a clear
character as did George Roth as Polonius...CAPSULE JUDGEMENT: HAMLET is
an awesome undertaking...it is a brave attempt to create a different
slant on the most oft-produced of Shakespeare's plays."
~ Roy Berko, The Times

Director Hansen takes his inspiration from the 1920 silent film produced
by Danish silent movie-star Asta Nielsen, in which new elements were
combined with features (and a few lines) familiar from Shakespeare's
version of the legend. The most important of these changes sees Hamlet
made into a female character - a princess forced to masquerade as a man
by her scheming mother; from this follows Hamlet's secret passion for
Horatio and rivalry with Ophelia for his love.=20
