FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Cleveland, Ohio, October 3, 2006-Artistic Director David Shimotakahara =
announced that GroundWorks Dancetheater has been selected as the =
region's first professional company to do a creative residency at the =
newly opened 50,834 square-foot dance and theater center at University =
of Akron. =20
=20
The facility, an addition to Guzzetta Hall at 157 University Avenue in =
Akron, ranks as one of the largest and best-equipped campus dance and =
theater centers in the country featuring seven state-of-the-art dance =
studios, a design and lighting studio, scene and costume shops, trainer =
and physiotherapy facilities, locker rooms, offices, lounges and =
technologically-enhanced classrooms.
=20
According to Shimotakahara, Neil Sapienza, Chair of the University of =
Akron School of Dance, Theatre and Arts Administration, "wants students =
to have as much contact with professionals as possible. He is =
encouraging professional companies to use this facility as a laboratory =
for the creation of new work and will eventually open the facility to =
companies from all over the country."
=20
Discussions between Shimotakahara and Sapienza have been ongoing for the =
past four months. "We believe that this is a fantastic opportunity to =
further GroundWorks' connection to the Akron community," Shimotakahara =
says. "We've been nurturing that relationship since our beginning. =
This ties in nicely with our annual performances at the Akron Ice House, =
and is part of the regional presence that we want to grow. We feel =
extremely fortunate that Neil is open to that."
=20
GroundWorks' rehearsals will run from October 13 through October 26. =
The work will be premiered at its Landmark Series at Trinity Cathedral, =
2230 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, from November 11 through November 19. =
Friday and Saturday performances begin at 8 p.m., Sunday matinee is at 3 =
p.m. Tickets are on sale now. General admission is $22, seniors and =
students are $15. Special discounts are available for Trinity Cathedral =
members. For ticket purchase, contact GroundWorks at 216.691.3180 =
