Set in a Pittsburgh boardinghouse in 1911, the play examines African =
Americans' search for their cultural identity following the repression =
of American slavery. For Herald Loomis, this search involves the =
physical migration from the South to the city of Pittsburgh in an =
attempt to find his wife. Herald's search for his identity, represented =
as his song, is unsuccessful until he finally embraces the pain of both =
his own past and the past of his ancestors, and moves on to =
self=E2=80=91sufficiency.

=20

The playwright, August Wilson, died in 2005. His plays earned him one =
Tony, two Pulitzers, three American Theatre Critics awards and seven New =
York Drama Critics Circle Awards. In 10 plays, each situated in a =
different decade of the 20th century, Wilson shared comedy and tragedy =
through the visionary aspirations of the African=E2=80=91American =
history and culture. All except one of his screenplays are set in =
Pittsburgh's Hill District where he grew up and spent part of his early =
adulthood.

=20

The Studio Theatre can be accessed by using the secured underground =
parking entrance #5 at East 30th Street and Woodland Avenue. For more =
information please call: Fred Perry 216 987-4535
