  THIS IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO INTERVIEW PATRONS ON WHY THEY CHOOSE THEATER TONIGHT!

  Cleveland, OH --  October 19, 2006 – A Free Night of Theater is in the works for Thursday, October 19, 2006, in Cleveland and Akron.  Presented nationally by Theater Communications Group and locally by the Cleveland Theater Collective, this 15 city event encompasses 14 local professional theater companies opening their doors on October 19th and offering free tickets to their productions.  Northeast Ohioans are encouraged to experience the excitement of live theater and go to a place they have never been to before.

  To make a reservation for two free tickets, patrons went to www.clevelandtheater.com starting the first week of October.  (Note, no phone or in-person box office reservations were taken.)

  Among the goals of this event, the Cleveland Theater Collective and Theater Communications Group hope to provide increased awareness of and exposure to the quality and breadth of theater in Cleveland and Akron.

The Cuyahoga County Commissioners and Cleveland City Council issued resolutions encouraging Northeast Ohioans to participate in this opportunity, enjoy and celebrate the arts, as well as 

acknowledge the tremendous impact arts and culture has on the life, vibrancy and economy of Northeast Ohio.

  Free Night of Theater is an audience development program conceived and initiated nationally by Theatre Communications Group, the leading national theater service organization.  The program was piloted in three cities in 2005 and has been expanded to fifteen cities or regions, including Cleveland and Akron in 2006.  The hope is that the program will  go national in one to two years.

  The concept is this:  On Thursday, October 19, 2006, theaters in selected local markets will make an extraordinary offer.  On that day, anyone can attend a show at a participating theater they have never attended before for free. The program will provide non-theatergoers the opportunity to attend any of the participating theaters, while at the same time, encourage patrons of individual theaters to broaden their experience by attending another theater.  14 area theaters will participate in Cleveland’s Free Night of Theater.  The list is still being finalized, but includes The Bang and The Clatter Theatre Company, Beck Center for the Arts, Carousel Dinner Theater, Cesar’s Forum, Charenton Theater Company, The Cleveland Play House, Cleveland Public Theatre, Dobama Theatre, Ensemble Theatre, Great Lakes Theatre Festival, the Jewish Community Center of Cleveland, Karamu House, Red Hen Productions, and TITLEWave theatre.

  The program is being coordinated in Cleveland by the Cleveland Theater Collective, Cleveland’s comprehensive theater service organization.  Founded in 2000, CTC’s mission is to promote professional theater in northeast Ohio by improving its accessibility, quality, and viability.  22 area theaters and 150 theater artists are CTC members.  

  CTC has received funding from the Cuyahoga County Economic Development ACE program, The Cleveland Foundation and The George Gund Foundation for Free Night of Theater.
