AUGUST WILSONS JOE TURNERS COME AND GONE FEATURED THIS FALL AT CUYAHOGA
COMMUNITY COLLEGES METRO CAMPUS
CLEVELAND --- August Wilson's Joe Turner's Come and Gone, under the
skillful direction of Jimmie Woody, will be the upcoming season feature at
Cuyahoga Community Colleges Metropolitan Campus beginning October 26. The
play is the Fall Theatre Arts show produced by the Metro Campus Theatre
Department and features a cast of Tri-C students, staff and community
members.
Set in a Pittsburgh boardinghouse in 1911, the play examines African
Americans' search for their cultural identity following the repression of
American slavery. For Herald Loomis, this search involves the physical
migration from the South to the city of Pittsburgh in an attempt to find his
wife. Herald's search for his identity, represented as his song, is
unsuccessful until he finally embraces the pain of both his own past and the
past of his ancestors, and moves on to self-sufficiency.
The play is one of many of the famed August Wilson, who died in 2005. His
plays earned him one Tony, two Pulitzers, three American Theatre Critics
awards and seven New York Drama Critics Circle Awards. In 10 plays, each
situated in a different decade of the 20th century, Wilson shared comedy and
tragedy through the visionary aspirations of the African-American history
and culture. All except one of his screenplays are set in Pittsburgh's Hill
District where he grew up and spent part of his early adulthood.
This emotional and moving performance will run: October 26, 27, 28, and
November 2, 3, 4 at 8 p.m. and on Sundays, October 29 and November 5 at 3
p.m. in the Metro Studio Theatre (MTH 10). The Theatre can be accessed by
using the secured underground parking entrance #5 at East 30th Street and
Woodland Avenue.
General admission tickets are $10; students and seniors are $7. Group
ticket sales for 10 or more are $5/ticket paid in advance. For more
information or to make reservations call (216) 987-4211 or e-mail
