Cleveland, OH - Cleveland poet Michael Salinger and the Arts Education
Department at Playhouse Square Center welcome the inventor of poetry
slam, Marc Smith, to the Idea Center at Playhouse Square on Friday,
October 27.  Salinger, who leads the Slam U poetry program for teens at
Playhouse Square Center, and Smith will host of day of professional
development activities for local artists followed by a performance at
7:30 pm in the Idea Center's Westfield Insurance Studio Theatre (1375
Euclid Ave.).   The performance is open to the public and features Marc
Smith along with various local poets.  Admission is $5 at the door.=20

Poet and construction worker Marc Smith founded poetry slam at Chicago's
Green Mill Tavern in 1984 as a way to energize open mike readings.  Born
on the southeast side of Chicago, Smith's innate sense of rhythm and
unflinching realism has made him one of the country's most compelling
performers. Full of grit, his performances break poetic boundaries,
giving audiences an acute vision of what poetry is and what it can be.
Smith has been featured on CNN and his work has been cited in The Wall
Street Journal, The New York Times, USA Today and The Los Angeles Times.

Michael Salinger has been writing and performing poetry and fiction for
over 25 years.  In this time he has become a fixture in the performance
poetry and education community. His work has appeared in dozens of
literary journals published across the US and Canada.  Five time captain
and coach of the Cleveland Slam team that represented the city at the
National Poetry Slam competition, he has also served as a consultant and
board member to Poetry Slam, Inc., the governing body of Poetry Slams
across the country.  Salinger recently co-authored the professional book
Outspoken: How to Improve Writing and Speaking Skills Through
Performance Poetry with author Sara Holbrook.

Poetry slam is the competitive art of performance poetry.  Emphasis is
on both writing and performance.  At a poetry slam, poets perform their
work and members of the audience serve as judges.  This brand of poetry
has gained in popularity across the country and there are now annual
