Boatscapes and Landscapes

by Barbara Kinsman Swasey

October 25 through November 26, 2006

=20

My love of the sea is unwavering and the architecture of a boat still
captivates me. In this body of work, I have added, for the first time,
multi-layered color pencil drawings in addition to my transparent
watercolors. I can only ponder that the new infusion of color in this
work was perhaps inspired by the brilliant colors of the pond boat sails
in Paris. "Less is more" is expressed in the new simplicity of the
composition often a single focus, up close, of a familiar subject.

=20

The Fields of Solomon, 2075 A.D.

by Daiv Whaley

November 3, 2006 through January 8, 2007

=20

As a conceptual artist, I find myself working in several different
mediums depending on the need and the efficacy of certain technologies.
Polaroid photography, on the other hand, is simply a love-a joy and a
love of 'accidentally' capturing some perfect moment of beauty in the
natural world and watching it develop before my eyes.

=20

Flowers are amazing creations-their colors, shapes and sizes suggest
organic explosions out of the earth-floral fireworks. Again, their
organic systems-building themselves up out of the ground from tiny seeds
and synthesizing energy out of pure sunlight, water and soil-make them
amazing machines. Very good designs indeed from the greatest Designer!
With this juxtaposition in mind-the technology of nature-my Polaroid
photographs are attempts, hopefully successful, to fuse a science
fiction aesthetic to natural beauty with technological assistance

=20

Using unusual angles, close-up shots, light intensity, intentional
blurriness of the images, as well as my own manipulations of the film as
the pictures develop, I strive to create a modern or even futuristic
feeling with each photograph. The title of each piece also contributes
to this aesthetic, as words are important.

=20

As each Polaroid is an accidental capturing-and-creating process that
occurs 'in the field,' I use no computer manipulations or software to
create the effects seen in my images. In that sense, these photographs
are a new and 'natural' phylum of flower imagery. And so the circle
completes itself.

High Fire: Kiln-Transformed Glass

by Rene Culler

December 1, 2006 through January 26, 2007

=20

Glass is a challenging material. The transformation is magical as the
plastic material cools to create a definition of form. For
internationally-renowned artist Rene Culler, the process of creating
blown and cast glass works of art is as important as achieving the final
product. She thinks of it as "trial by fire." "For me, there is so
much refined glass produced that is beautiful and perfect. Often it is
so perfect that there is little evidence that an artist's hand was
involved in the making of the object," says Culler. "I live viewers and
glass connoisseurs to be able to see the history of the piece as it has
evolved through its many stages and techniques."=20

=20

Rene Culler is a trained studio artist in the areas of glass, sculpture,
painting and drawing. Culler works primarily in glass at her hot glass
studio located in Cleveland, Ohio. She continues to develop a
wide-ranging body of work that includes glass paintings and public art
architectural pieces, as well as blown glass and cast three-dimensional
sculptures. Through Culler's training at the Pilchuck School of Glass
in Seattle, Washington, she learned methods for flip-over and fold-over
lips for bowls while creating refined blown pieces.
