The Oberlin Conservatory of Music Announces the Winners

of its 2006 Concerto Competition

OBERLIN, OHIO (Nov. 3, 2006)=97Four musicians were selected from 19 =20
finalists to win the Oberlin Conservatory of Music=92s 2006 Concerto =20
Competition, held in Finney Chapel on Oct. 7, 2006. Each student =20
receives the honor of performing as soloist with the Oberlin =20
Orchestra and Oberlin Chamber Orchestra during the 2006-2007 season.

The first concert to feature an Oberlin laureate, pianist Ji Yeon =20
Shin =9207 of South Korea, takes place Friday, Nov. 10, 2006, at 8 p.m. =20=

A student of Associate Professor of Piano Haewon Song, Shin will =20
perform Rachmaninoff=92s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 43 with =20=

the Oberlin Orchestra. Tobias Picker=92s Old and Lost Rivers and =20
Dvor=E1k=92s Symphony No. 9 (=93=46rom the New World=94) are also =
featured on =20
the program.

The other winners are cellist Paul Dwyer =9207 from Hamburg, Germany, =20=

who studies with Assistant Professor of Cello Amir Eldan; soprano =20
Jennifer Kelsey Jakob =9107 from Kempten, Germany, a student of =20
Professor of Singing Marlene Ralis Rosen; and clarinetist Jack =20
Marquardt =9107 of Lake Forest, Illinois, who studies with Associate =20
Professor of Clarinet Richard Hawkins.

Marquardt will perform Aaron Copland=92s Clarinet Concerto with the =20
Oberlin Chamber Orchestra on Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2006, at 8 p.m. The =20
chamber orchestra will also perform the overture and ballet music to =20
Mozart=92s Idomeneo and Schubert=92s Symphony No. 8 in B minor =20
(=93Unfinished=94).

Jakob will sing Benjamin Britten=91s Les illuminations with the Oberlin =20=

Chamber Orchestra on Friday, March 2, 2007, at 8 p.m. The full =20
orchestra version of Copland=92s Appalachian Spring and John Adams=92 =20=

Shaker Loops will round out the program.

Oberlin=92s orchestral season concludes with Dwyer performing Cello =20
Concerto No. 1 in E-flat Major, Op. 107 by Shostakovich, with the =20
Oberlin Orchestra on Wednesday, May 9, 2007, at 8 p.m. Mahler=92s =20
Symphony No. 1 (=93Titan=94) is also on the program.

All concerts are free and open to the public, and take place in =20
Finney Chapel, with Bridget-Michaele Reischl, Music Director of the =20
Oberlin Orchestras, conducting. Finney Chapel, which is wheelchair =20

Four distinguished guests adjudicated this year=92s concerto =20
competition. Violinist Pamela Frank, renowned soloist and chamber =20
musician, represented the string division; Benjamin Kamins, Professor =20=

of Bassoon at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, =20
represented the winds, brass, and percussion division; baritone =20
Timothy Noble, Distinguished Professor of Voice at Indiana =20
University, represented the vocal division; and pianist Victor =20
Rosenbaum, a member of the faculties at the New England Conservatory =20
of Music and the Longy School of Music, represented the piano =20
division. Bridget-Michaele Reischl served as a non-voting judge.

Ji Yeon Shin, piano

Ji Yeon Shin, a 20-year-old pianist from Seoul, Korea, has performed =20
across North America, Italy, and Korea. She made her professional =20
debut with the Seoul Orchestra when she was 14 years old, performing =20
Saint-Sa=EBns Concerto No. 2.  Recent performances include concerti =20
with the Bacau Philharmonic Orchestra in Italy, with the Yewon =20
Orchestra at the Seoul Arts Center, with the Fort Worth Symphony =20
Orchestra, and with the Shreveport (Louisiana) Symphony Orchestra. =20
She has also presented solo and chamber music recitals sponsored by =20
the Kumho Arts Foundation, has performed at the Phillips Collection =20
in Washington, D.C., on the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert Series in =20=

Chicago, and at the Cleveland Museum of Art and at the Allen Theater =20
in Cleveland=92s Playhouse Square in concerts which were broadcast live =20=

on 104.9 WCLV-FM, Cleveland=92s classical radio station. Among the many =20=

competitions Shin has won are first prize and the special performance =20=

prize at the 2005 Kingsville International Piano Competition and =20
first prize at the Cleveland International Piano Competition (Junior =20
Division). She was selected as a winner at the TCU-Van Cliburn =20
Institute Concerto Competition, the MTNA Competition, and she was a =20
semi-finalist Valsesia Musica International Competition in Italy. She =20=

participated twice in the Oberlin International Piano Competition, =20
winning first and second prizes. In Korea, she won first prize at the =20=

E-hwa National Competition, the Korean Newspaper Music Competition, =20
the Chunchu Competition, the Samik Piano Competition, the Seoul =20
Orchestra Concerto Competition, and, as a student at the Seoul Arts =20
High School, the Outstanding Pianist Award. At Oberlin she is a =20
recipient of the Dean=92s Talent Scholarship and the Rudolf Serkin =20
Prize. She has participated in master classes with such renowned =20
pianists as Boris Berman, Fabio Bidini, Wha-Kyung Byun, Pavlina =20
Dokovska, Min Kim, Julian Martin, Harold Martina, John Perry, Russell =20=

Sherman, Jerome Rose, and Tamas Ungar.

Jack Marquardt, clarinet
Jack Marquardt began clarinet studies at age 10 and is now in his =20
senior year at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music studying clarinet =20
with Richard Hawkins.  While at Oberlin, he has performed in the =20
Oberlin Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, and Wind Ensemble. A native of =20
Lake Forest, Illinois, he was a member of the Chicago Youth Symphony =20
Orchestra and Encore Chamber Orchestra, and was a guest winner in the =20=

Midwest Young Artists=92 Walgreen=92s Concerto competition. He spent two =
=20
summers at the Aspen Music Festival and School, studying with Ted =20
Oien, and he has also participated in the Brevard and Interlochen =20
summer music festivals. He has also studied with Darleen Carl-Beck, =20
Steve Cohen, Deborah Chodaki, and Robert Spring.

Jennifer Jakob, soprano

Jennifer Jakob is a 22-year-old senior voice major from Kempton, =20
Germany, currently studying with Professor of Singing Marlene Ralis =20
Rosen. Her Oberlin credits include the upcoming production of =20
L'elisir d'amore (Adina), Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor (Anna =20
Reich), Dialogues des Carm=E9lites (Sister Mathilde), La Cambiale di =20
Matrimonio (Clarina, Oberlin in Italy), Le Nozze di Figaro (Chorus), =20
and Orpheus in the Underworld (Chorus). In 2007 she returns to the =20
Gerdine Young Artist Program of Opera Theatre St. Louis, where she =20
will cover the title role of Anna Karenina and perform in La =20
Traviata, I Puritani, and The Mikado.

  Paul Dwyer, cello

Paul Dwyer started playing the cello at age 6 in Vienna, Austria, =20
where he lived for eight years before moving to Munich, Germany. In =20
Germany, the cello became an increasingly important part of his life =20
(next to soccer and journalism); he became involved in numerous =20
ensembles, ranging from traditional chamber music and the =20
Bundesjugendorchester (National Youth Orchestra of Germany) to a rock =20=

cello quartet. In 2001, Dwyer was awarded second prize on the =20
national level of the German competition Jugend musiziert. He began =20
his studies at Oberlin with Peter Rejto. Since recovering from a =20
blood clot in his right shoulder and subsequent rib removal in =20
December 2003, Dwyer has become a prizewinner in the Corpus Christi =20
International Competition for Piano and Strings, the Hellam Young =20
Artists=92 Competition, the International Heida Hermanns Competition, =20=

and the Cleveland Cello Society Scholarship Competition. In 2006, he =20
was awarded the Ernest Hatch Wilkins Award for academic excellence by =20=

Oberlin College. Dwyer has been an active participant in master =20
classes of the Schleswig-Holstein Musikfestival with David Geringas =20
and of the Kronberg Academy with Frans Helmerson. After one year of =20
study with Visiting Professor Hans-J=F8rgen Jensen, he currently =20
studies with Assistant Professor of Cello Amir Eldan and expects to =20
graduate from the Oberlin Conservatory with a bachelor of music =20
degree in May 2007.

the Oberlin Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, and Wind Ensemble. A native of =
Lake Forest, Illinois, he was a member of the Chicago Youth Symphony =
Orchestra and Encore Chamber Orchestra, and was a guest winner in the =
Midwest Young Artists=92 Walgreen=92s Concerto competition. He spent two =
summers at the Aspen Music Festival and School, studying with Ted Oien, =
and he has also participated in the Brevard and Interlochen summer music =
festivals. He has also studied with Darleen Carl-Beck, Steve Cohen, =

12.0px 0.0px"><B>Jennifer Jakob, </B><B><I>soprano</I></B></P><P =
style=3D"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 12.0px 0.0px">Jennifer Jakob is a =
22-year-old senior voice major from Kempton, Germany, currently studying =
with Professor of Singing Marlene Ralis Rosen. Her Oberlin credits =
include=A0the upcoming production of<I> L'elisir d'amore</I> (Adina), =
<I>Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor </I>(Anna Reich), <I>Dialogues des =
Carm=E9lites</I> (Sister Mathilde), <I>La Cambiale di Matrimonio</I> =
(Clarina, Oberlin in Italy), <I>Le Nozze di Figaro </I>(Chorus), and =
<I>Orpheus in the Underworld</I> (Chorus). In 2007 she returns to the =
Gerdine Young Artist Program of Opera Theatre St. Louis, where she will =
cover the title role of Anna Karenina and perform in <I>La Traviata, I =
Puritani,</I> and <I>The Mikado.</I></P><P style=3D"margin: 0.0px 0.0px =
12.0px 0.0px"><I>=A0</I><B>Paul Dwyer, </B><B><I>cello</I></B></P><P =
style=3D"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 12.0px 0.0px">Paul Dwyer started playing =
the cello at age 6 in Vienna, Austria, where he lived for eight years =
before moving to Munich, Germany. In Germany, the cello became an =
increasingly important part of his life (next to soccer and journalism); =
he became involved in numerous ensembles, ranging from traditional =
chamber music and the <I>Bundesjugendorchester</I> (National Youth =
Orchestra of Germany) to a rock cello quartet. In 2001, Dwyer was =
awarded second prize on the national level of the German competition =
<I>Jugend</I> <I>musiziert</I>. He began his studies at Oberlin with =
Peter Rejto. Since recovering from a blood clot in his right shoulder =
and subsequent rib removal in December 2003, Dwyer has become a =
prizewinner in the Corpus Christi International Competition for Piano =
and Strings, the Hellam Young Artists=92 Competition, the International =
Heida Hermanns Competition, and the Cleveland Cello Society Scholarship =
Competition. In 2006, he was awarded the Ernest Hatch Wilkins Award for =
academic excellence by Oberlin College. Dwyer has been an active =
participant in master classes of the <I>Schleswig-Holstein =
Musikfestival</I> with David Geringas and of the <I>Kronberg Academy =
</I>with Frans Helmerson. After one year of study with Visiting =
Professor Hans-J=F8rgen Jensen, he currently studies with Assistant =
Professor of Cello Amir Eldan and expects to graduate from the Oberlin =
Conservatory with a bachelor of music degree in May 2007.</P><DIV =
