Max -

I wish more High School kids were like you. I would agree with Mike and
Ike that you are the coolest!

I as well would come see you in Urinetown if you get cast.

There are tons of brilliant shows Stagecrafters Teen Academy could be
holding auditions for. Previously it was Jesus Christ Superstar, before that
it was Sweeney Todd, and prior to that it was Les Miserables. It seems to me
that the crucifixion of Christ, a murderous barber, and the gloomy deaths
and suicides in Les Mis make Urinetown pretty low key, in terms of
objectionable material. As a student, a junior in high school, I'm
particularly offended that you feel as though the material in Urinetown
would be unacceptable to produce in a 8th-12th grade setting.

Stagecrafters is not a school. It's better than school. The teen production
is intended to bring together some of the most talented kids in the area,
and to produce a show that would probably never pass inspection by
administrators at any high school. I feel the constant push to bring new,
challenging material to kids who engross themselves in theatre, some of them
intending on pursuing theatre as a major in college or a career in the
future, really pushes us to new levels. There are so many restrictions on
students because of our age anyway, why dismiss our chance to show we can
pull off an adult comedy, which ironically is a satire of every other show
that every other high school is doing.

These shows are unique opportunities, where I can do Urinetown instead of
doing "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown" for the fifth time, or "Joseph and
the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" for the fourth time.

I'm serious about theatre, and I'd really much rather be doing a serious
show, so why let my age determine what shows i can and can't do? Without
this program where else am I ever going to get the chance to be Anthony in
Sweeney Todd, or Pilate in Jesus Christ Superstar?

I did a google search for "high school Urinetown"

There are at least half a dozen schools performing it right now.

Maybe the sex, murder, smoking and perjury in Chicago are actually
appropriate for a high school show, but i actually prefer that I'm
auditioning for the hilarious production of Urinetown at Stagecrafters.

Sincerely,

Max Chernin (11th Grade)
