THE FUN BEGINS WEDNESDAY WITH TWO FREE PERFORMANCES OF
Ragamala Music and Dance Theater's
"FROM TEMPLE TO THEATER" =20

Wednesday, November 15, 2006 at 10:00am (one-hour Student Matinee
performance - FREE with Advanced Reservations

Running Time: 1 Hour
Recommended for Grades: 3-6

This performance traces the evolution of the classical dance form of
Bharatanatyam from the ancient temples of South India to the theatres of
today. Ragamala artists present excerpts from the company's repertoire,
ranging from classical work to cross-cultural collaborations, as well as
present age-appropriate explanations of the history, traditions, and
cultural roots of the dance form. www.ragamala.net

plus a 7:30pm (Full evening-length performance)

One of the most popular of Ragamala's offerings, this full
evening-length performance of "From Temple to Theater" is accompanied by
live Taiko drummer, Meleck Davis. Mr. Davis, a recent convert to the
beautiful art of Taiko drumming, has been playing drums for 15 years.
In addition to his experience behind the trap set, Mr. Davis has four
years of study in West African percussion under Ghanaian master drummer
Sowah Mensah, and also briefly studied Bharatanatyam with Ragamala.
This exciting program takes the audience on a journey through time,
presenting both classical Bharatanatyam and highlights of the company's
stunning contemporary collaborations. Set to diverse musical
influences, such as the thundering Taiko drums of Japan and the soulful
classical music of India, the performance incorporates stirring original
poetry and the a cappella vocalizations of Zap Mama. "Ragamala's work
pulsates with rhythmic excitement and visceral narration of stories both
ancient and modern. The gods would have to be crazy not to love this."
Linda Shapiro, St. Paul Pioneer Press www.ragamala.net

BOTH PERFORMANCES ARE PART OF THE OHIO ARTS COUNCIL'S IMPACT TOUR AND
ARE FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
Ragamala's performances are part of the Ohio Arts Council's IMPACT
project (International Music and Performing Arts in Communities Tour).
Funding is provided by the Ohio Arts Council, Arts Midwest and the
National Endowment for the Arts, and the tour is coordinated by the Ohio
Arts Presenters Network in cooperation with the Ohio Arts Council.

Don't miss this week's film
"TSOTSI" - Winner of the 2006 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film
Friday, November 17, 2006 - 8:00pm

2005 (R) 91 min. S. Africa/subtitles
Director: Gavin Hood
Cast: Presley Chweneyagae, Terry Pheto

Based on South African playwright Athol Fugard's only novel, "TSOTSI" is
a thrilling, provocative look at life in the townships outside
present-day Johannesburg. Presley Chweneyagae stars as the title
character, a teenager with a killer stare who lives alone in a
ramshackle room in a poor shantytown, where he pulls off petty crimes
with the help of three compatriots. But after they stab a man to death
on the subway, Tsotsi runs off to a wealthy section of the city and
steals a car. Only later does he discover that there is a baby in the
back seat - and decides to keep it for himself. As Tsotsi finally does
look back at his own childhood, he tries to take care of the infant,
carrying it around in a paper bag and forcing a young mother, Miriam, to
breast feed it at gunpoint. At this juncture, writer-director Gavin
Hood could have opted for trite sentimentality, but instead he delves
deeper into Tsotsi's psyche, as the young man might have already gone
too far to turn back now. "TSOTSI" is a pulsating, electrifying film
propelled by Chweneyagae's powerful, mesmerizing performance. The
pounding soundtrack features popular local Kwaito music by Zola, who
also plays crime lord Fela in the film. "TSOTSI" "will rank as one of
the best films ever to come out of South Africa," as Fugard himself
said.

"What a simple yet profound story this is." - Roger Ebert,
