About Thomas Gibbons...

Thomas Gibbons last play at Karamu was the critically acclaimed
"bee-luther-hatchee," directed by Artistic Director Terrence Spivey in 2004.
Quoted by Linda Eisenstein in the Cleveland Plain Dealer, "A powerful,
provocative piece of theatrical writing. You want to run down the street
twisting people's arms to see it." Gibbons works have been produced in
regional theatres throughout the country and "Permanent Collection" has been
one of the most produced plays the past two seasons. Karamu is delighted to
reunite with Mr. Gibbons in bringing this thought provoking play to the
audience in Cleveland and beyond.

PERMANENT COLLECTION - Barrymore Award for Outstanding New Play/Cleveland
Premier (Drama) (Black History Month) By Thomas Gibbons
Directed by Terrence Spivey
Arena Theatre, January 19 - February 11, 2007
(Previews January 17th & 18th @ 7:30PM) "Permanent Collection" explores
racial politics within the art world. An Impressionistic painting or an
African mask; which holds more artistic value? This thought provoking drama
was inspired by the true controversies surrounding Philadelphia's acclaimed
Barnes Foundation. In the play, new museum director, Sterling North, an
African American, discovers African American art tucked away in storage at
Morris Foundation and challenges the museum to display them beside European
art.(Inspired by a true story that turned the art world on its head; for
ages 17 and up).

Gibbons' intellectually charged drama is a beautifully balanced dialectic
that treats a complicated and emotional issue without cheap conclusions ...
Sophisticated and deft, it is a provocative treatment of the unanswerable."
