          OVER THE RHINE
Holiday Concert
  Tuesday, December 5
8:00 PM
Over the Rhine draw their name from the inner-city Cincinnati neighborhood in which they first played together. Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist (husband and wife) are the musicians who form the core of Over the Rhine. Detweiler has characterized their music as "post-nuclear, pseudo-alternative, folk-tinged art-pop." Bergquist's voice stands prominently at the center of their music.
Over the Rhine was formed in the spring of 1989 and in 1991 they released their first album, Till We Have Faces. They started as a quartet with guitarist Ric Hordinski and drummer Brian Kelley, but have both toured and recorded in many shapes and forms. They have opened for Bob Dylan and toured with Cowboy Junkies. Paste Magazine granted one of its first five-star reviews to Over The Rhine's album "OHIO." Their latest release, "Drunkard's Prayer" is an intimate recording about their marriage which drew critical acclaim from numerous sources.
Their music is characterized by the musical and songwriting talents of Detweiler (keyboards and acoustic guitar) and Bergquist (vocals, keyboards and acoustic guitar).

  Dear friends,

In the early days, I once described the life of the touring musician like this:
   It’s a beautiful vacation
But you wear Salvation Army clothes

I look out the guest room window here at the farm as I write this: I see nothing but increasingly familiar trees, fields and sky: more than worth the price of admission.

The songs continue to arrive, and we continue to need to know where the songs want to take us. We’re still curious. We still have the ability to be surprised.

I’ve been trying to figure out why it was so fun to write and record these songs in particular. Karin and I are drawn to Christmas music like children to snow: it just feels like play. It could be that Karin grew up with the voices of Bing Crosby and Nat King Cole on her grandmother’s record player – singers who made Christmas feel like no other time of year. It could be that my own father loved to unearth odd Christmas gems like “Do You Hear What I Hear” or Mahalia Jackson’s “Go Tell It On The Mountain.”

Come late November on Nowhere Farm when the leaves are lying down and the earth is lying fallow, we’ll put lights up in the windows and trim a Nowhere Farm tree, and lift a glass of something warm and glowing with the familiarity of home. (Karin has always loved this time of year.) And then we’ll come looking for you with these songs all wrapped up for real. (In the thick of the night, take me out of the cold, let me sing inside like a radio…)

And when we finally get back to the farm a few days before Christmas Eve, and it’s just the two of us and the dogs and the charcoal cat, we’ll pray we get snowed in. And after the storm, when all is still, the stars will wink at the sleepy farm, and we’ll hear the sound of the violin in our heads, and we’ll burrow down deep in our beds, and we’ll breathe ourselves grinning full of Christmas.

   Happy holidays,

Linford Detweiler for Over the Rhine, Nowhere Farm, November 3, 2006

  Charles Dickens'
A CHRISTMAS CAROL
Performed by the
Largely Literary Theater Company

  Friday, December 8
and Saturday, December 9
8:00 PM
The Largely Literary Theater will make its Kent debut with two performances of their critically acclaimed three-person version of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol.
Adapted and directed by Mark Dawidziak, this 90-minute play in two acts emphasizes fidelity to the original book. The basic concept is that the audience has gathered to hear Dickens give one of his popular readings of the story about miserly Ebenezer Scrooge.
Dickens (played by Dawidziak) appears on stage, opens the book and starts reading the familiar words, "Marley was dead to begin with..."As the "reading" progresses, a second actor (Tom Stephan) appears as Scrooge. This is the only role he plays as the story literally comes to life around Dickens.
The third actor, Sara Showman, plays almost all the other roles -- men and women, ghosts and mortals -- with Dickens moving in and out of the action as a third voice is needed.
"All three are excellent actors who make this staging of A Christmas Carol a most intimate experience," the Akron Beacon Journal said of the Largely Literary Theater Company's production. "This adaptation of A Christmas Carol taps into Dickens' heavy theme of darkness, which is often glossed over in other adaptations."
