FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

The Oberlin Conservatory of Music to Present U.S. Premiere of Olga =20
Neuwirth=92s Lost Highway

Music theater work based upon the David Lynch film to premiere in =20
Oberlin, Ohio, and in New York City at Miller Theatre.

OBERLIN, OHIO (January 2, 2007)=97Lost Highway, a dramatic music =20
theater work by noted Austrian composer Olga Neuwirth, will receive =20
its U.S. premiere in February 2007 by the Contemporary Music Division =20=

of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music as a co-production with Miller =20
Theatre at Columbia University.

Neuwirth collaborated with Elfriede Jelinek, winner of the 2004 Nobel =20=

Prize for Literature, on the libretto for Lost Highway. Its genesis, =20
however, is the film by David Lynch and Barry Gifford, released in =20
1997 by October Films. Neuwirth=92s Lost Highway received its world =20
premiere in Graz, Austria, on October 31, 2003, during the =20
Steirischer Herbst Festival of New Music in co-production with the =20
year-long festival Graz 2003: Cultural Capital of Europe and Theater =20
Basel. About that production, Larry L. Lash wrote in the Financial =20
Times: =93Lost Highway entertains, challenges our perceptions of opera, =20=

and demands to be experienced.=94 For his New York Times review of the =20=

opera Lost Highway, Robert Hilferty wrote: =93The resulting score is =20
enigmatic and labyrinthine, constantly morphing from one thing to the =20=

next. Ms. Neuwirth =85 knows how to bend and twist sound like no other.=94=

The U.S. premiere of Lost Highway will be staged in Oberlin Thursday =20
through Saturday, February 8 through 10, 2007, at 8 p.m. in Finney =20
Chapel on the Oberlin College campus. The work, which is performed in =20=

English, then travels to New York City for two performances at Miller =20=

Theatre on Friday, February 23, and Saturday, February 24, at 8 p.m. =20
These productions contain adult content and themes, and are not =20
recommended for young audiences.

Tickets for the Oberlin production of Lost Highway are $5 for the =20
general public and $3 for students. Call Oberlin=92s Central Ticket =20
Service, located in the lobby of Hall Auditorium, at 440-775-8169 or =20
1-800-371-0178. Seating is general admission. Finney Chapel is =20
wheelchair accessible and is located on the southwest corner of =20
Lorain St. (Route 511) and N. Professor St., across from Tappan =20
Square. Complete information about the Oberlin production is =20
available at www.oberlin.edu/con.

Reserved-seat tickets for the Miller Theatre production are $35 and =20
can be purchased by calling Miller Theatre=92s box office at =20
212-854-7799 or online at www.millertheatre.com. Miller Theatre is =20
wheelchair accessible and is located on the campus of Columbia =20
University on Broadway at 116th Street, New York, New York.

A decade after Lynch=92s Lost Highway first intrigued audiences world =20=

wide, the controversial film has been transformed from a tense, terse =20=

screenplay into a composition seething with sound. The forthcoming =20
U.S. premiere is a unique collaborative production of the Oberlin =20
Conservatory of Music=92s Division of Contemporary Music, featuring =20
performances by the acclaimed Oberlin Contemporary Music Ensemble, =20
original video footage by the Oberlin production crew, live =20
electronics, and a cast drawn from the Oberlin College student body.

Lost Highway centers on Fred Madison, an ardent jazz musician deeply =20
troubled by the closed world of his beautiful but glacial wife, =20
Renee. Tormented by eerie, anonymous videotapes and nightmarish =20
encounters with a macabre Mystery Man, Fred=92s sanity finally breaks =20=

upon his suspicion of an extramarital affair, and he murders Renee. =20
The shock of the event triggers an extravagant psychological shift.

Lynch has said that the story is =93about a man in trouble,=94 the =20
trouble being the rare mental disorder psychogenic fugue. Neuwirth =20
has commented on the film=92s musical, fugue-like structure, which =20
entwines one =93in a time loop,=94 and in her program notes for the =
opera =20
she writes: =93To avoid lapsing into mere representation on stage =85 it =
=20
was clear from the start that I had to conceive music and video (the =20
two forms of art which deal with time) simultaneously so that I would =20=

be able to match the famous film with a new arrangement of sound and =20
image.=94

Strickland Gardner Professor of Music Timothy Weiss will conduct the =20
award-winning Oberlin Contemporary Music Ensemble, with stage =20
direction and sound design provided respectively by Jonathon Field, =20
Associate Professor of Opera Theater and Director of Oberlin Opera =20
Theater, and Tom Lopez, Associate Professor of Computer Music and =20
Digital Arts and chair of the TIMARA (Technology in Music and Related =20=

Arts) program. The producer of Lost Highway is Professor of =20
Composition Lewis Nielson, Chair of Oberlin=92s Composition Department =20=

and Director of its Division of Contemporary Music.

Composer Olga Neuwirth is gaining acclaim for her unconventional =20
musical style, which deconstructs language and other everyday sounds =20
in order to find new, musical contexts for familiar acoustical =20
elements. Neuwirth has been an artist-in-residence at the Berliner =20
K=FCnstlerprogramm and composer-in residence with the Koninklijk =20
Philharmonic Orchestra and at the Luzerner Festwochen. Her first =20
opera, B=E4hlamms Fest, was performed during the Wiener Festwochen in =20=

1999, receiving the Ernst Krenek-Preis. The following year her =20
composition Clinamen/Nodus, written for Pierre Boulez and the London =20
Symphony Orchestra, premiered in London, followed by a world tour.

A trailblazer of the avant-garde, Neuwirth has said in reference to =20
her compositional style, =93How can you draw people in, making it =20
impossible for them to escape from listening? It=92s so hard in our =20
times to listen. But I never want to make music very clear. It must =20=

always be a riddle. There is never a theme you can easily latch onto.=94

Austrian novelist and playwright Elfriede Jelinek, co-librettist for =20
Lost Highway, won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2004. She made =20
her literary debut with the collection Lisas Schatten (Lisa=92s Shadow) =20=

in 1967. Alongside her literary writing she has made a reputation as =20
a dauntless polemicist with a web site always poised to comment on =20
burning issues. Her other literary prizes and awards include the =20
Bremer Literature Prize, the Berlin Theatre Prize, the City of =20
D=FCsseldorf Heinrich Heine Prize, the Lessing Critics=92 Prize, the =
Stig =20
Dagerman Prize and the Franz-Kafka Literature Prize.

Director, writer, and producer David Lynch made his feature-film =20
debut in 1977 with Eraserhead, which has been named by the Library of =20=

Congress to the National Film Registry of movies that have cultural, =20
historical, or aesthetic significance. Lynch has been nominated three =20=

times for the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences=92 Best =20
Director Oscar: The Elephant Man (1980), Blue Velvet (1986), and =20
Mulholland Drive (2001). His 1990 film, Wild at Heart, won the Cannes =20=

Film Festival=92s Palme d=92Or. Lynch=92s latest movie, Inland Empire, =20=

starring Laura Dern and Jeremy Irons, premiered at the Venice Film =20
Festival in September 2006.
