HAPPY NEW YEAR!
I'M PROUD TO ANNOUNCE STOCKER ARTS CENTER/LCCC'S 2007 WINTER/SPRING FILM =
SERIES

The Stocker Arts Center/LCCC Film Society's series focuses on human =
relationships, moral and social issues, cultural and religious =
diversity, and universal human emotions and aspirations, including =
humor, disappointment and tragedy. The Film Society tries to bring =
excellent foreign and domestic films that are not otherwise shown in =
Lorain County or have a very limited run. Full descriptions of the =
films follow:

January 12 - 8 pm
HALF NELSON=20

2006 (R) 106 min. U.S.A. =20
Director: Ryan Fleck =20
Cast: Ryan Gosling*, Shareeka Epps, Anthony Mackie

High school teacher Dan and quiet teenager Drey are two lonely souls who =
wander the planet looking to attach some semblance of meaning to their =
chaotic lives. Dan teaches Drey in a dilapidated school in Brooklyn, =
New York. Their relationship is unremarkable until Drey discovers Dan =
collapsed and clutching a crack pipe in a grimy toilet cubicle in the =
high school gym. It is from this pivotal moment that director Ryan =
Fleck builds a tentative friendship between these two unlikely allies, =
creating one of 2006's most arresting films in the process. To quote =
L.A. TIMES film critic Kenneth Turan: "In this cinematic season of =
vacuity and ineptitude, HALF NELSON has to be seen. Made with =
assurance, restraint and psychological acuity by director Ryan Fleck and =
anchored by Ryan Gosling's commanding performance, this paradigmatic =
American independent feature approaches recurring themes in a compelling =
new way. You can't ask more from a film than that." HALF NELSON is an =
honest and inspirational film that explores the precarious relationship =
between a white man struggling with his own demons and a young black =
girl on the verge of losing her innocence. Together the cast, crew, and =
writing team construct a powerful film about loneliness, addiction, and =
friendship that is likely to etch itself deeply into the memories of =
anyone who sees it. In particular, Gosling and newcomer Epps are =
sensational in their parts, giving career-defining performances that =
very few actors could ever hope to improve upon.

ZELARY

2003 (R) 150 min. Czech Republic/subtitles =20
Director: Ondrej Trojan =20
Cast: An=E1 Geislerov=E1, Gy=F6rgy Cserhalmi

It is the 1940s and the Czech lands have been occupied by the Nazis. =
Eliska is a young woman who was unable to complete medical school =
because the Germans closed the universities and now works as a nurse in =
a city hospital. She is also involved in the resistance movement along =
with her lover, the surgeon Richard, and their friend Dr. Chidek. One =
night, a man from a rural mountain area is brought to the hospital with =
serious injuries and desperately needs a transfusion. Eliska is the =
only one with the same blood type. Her blood saves his life and a =
connection is formed between the two that in the course of the story =
becomes an extraordinarily strong relationship between the modern, =
cosmopolitan, and educated Eliska and the barbaric, salt of the earth =
man with the soul of a child, Joza.

ZELARY tells the story of a clash between two different worlds and two =
different people. It is the story of an extraordinary relationship, of =
fear, misgivings, suspicion and especially of a love that forms out of =
antagonism, a love born of the common will to survive. ZELARY is also =
the story of a beautiful corner of the Earth where everything lives in =
accordance with nature and her often cruel and timeless laws that humans =
must adapt to and honor. Eliska, in spite of setbacks, but with great =
fervor, tries to learn this. Last but not least, ZELARY is also a =
dramatic story filled with unexpected twists of fate that take place in =
a forgotten part of Europe surrounded by the storm of war.

"This foreign import is more than just a suspenseful wartime story; =
there's a lack of cynicism, a willingness to embrace human possibility =
that's as old-fashioned as it is refreshing." - Erica Abeel, FILM =
JOURNAL INTERNATIONAL

AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH

2006 (PG) 100 min. U.S.A. Director: Davis Guggenheim =20
Cast: Al Gore, The Planet Earth

Humanity is sitting on a time bomb. If the vast majority of the world's =
scientists are right, we have just ten years to avert a major =
catastrophe that could send our entire planet into a tail-spin of epic =
destruction involving extreme weather, floods, droughts, epidemics and =
killer heat waves beyond anything we have ever experienced. A =
catastrophe we have helped create. If that sounds like a recipe for =
serious gloom and doom - think again. From director Davis Guggenheim =
comes the Sundance Film Festival hit, AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH, which =
offers a passionate and inspirational look at one man's commitment to =
expose the myths and misconceptions that surround global warming. That =
man is former Vice President Al Gore, who, in the wake of defeat in the =
2000 election, re-set the course of his life to focus on an all-out =
effort to help save the planet from irrevocable change. In this =
eye-opening and poignant portrait of Gore and his "traveling global =
warning show," Gore is funny, engaging, open and downright on fire about =
getting the surprisingly stirring truth about what he calls our =
"planetary emergency" out to ordinary citizens before it's too late. =
With 2005, the worst storm season ever experienced in America just =
behind us, it seems we have reached a tipping point - and Gore pulls no =
punches in explaining the dire situation. Interspersed with the bracing =
facts and future predictions is the story of Gore's personal journey: =
from an idealistic college student who first saw a massive environmental =
crisis looming; to a young Senator facing a harrowing family tragedy =
that altered his perspective; to the man who almost became President but =
instead returned to the most impassioned cause of his entire life - =
believing there is still time to make a difference. With wit, smarts =
and hope, AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH ultimately brings home Gore's persuasive =
argument that we can no longer afford to view global warming as a =
political issue - rather, it is simply one of the biggest moral =
challenges facing every person in our times.

"In 39 years, I have never written these words in a movie review, but =
here they are: YOU OWE IT TO YOURSELF TO SEE THIS FILM." - Roger Ebert, =

MONGOLIAN PING PONG

2005 (G) 102 min. China/Mongolia/subtitles
Director: Ning Hao
Cast: Hurichabilike, Dawa, Geliban

Three young boys living in the remote grasslands of Mongolia are =
mystified by a ping pong ball they discover floating in a stream one =
day. Is it an egg? A pearl? Even the wisest people in their small =
village don't know, so they set off on a grand adventure - through =
magnificent landscapes - to find out the truth. This is a beautifully =
shot, deceptively symbolic film about three boys living with their =
families on the edge of the Gobi desert. In its clearest, comic terms =
it's the story of their confusion when they find a ping pong ball =
floating down the river; in deeper, symbolic ones, it's a more dramatic =
illustration of how an ancient people now finds itself caught between =
two worlds. The boys may have found a small plastic ball, but they're =
the ones who are caught in a game of ping pong, slammed back and forth =
between their ancestors' culture and the modern world. Before the film =
is over, one boy will have gone away to school in the city; his sister =
will have left her boyfriend to join a dance troupe. It is a new era of =
opportunity for both of them, to be sure. But, the film suggests, =
they've bought that chance by selling their sense of wonder. Speaking =
of the film, Michael Atkinson of THE VILLAGE VOICE says, "Could be a =
meditational film - if, perhaps, it wasn't a sneaky comedy and, to boot, =
one of the most breathtaking cinematic records of landscape and sky ever =
filmed!" This beautiful, gentle film is suitable for children who don't =
mind subtitles.

ARMY OF SHADOWS

1969 (R) 145 min. France/subtitles =20
Director: Jean-Pierre Melville
Cast: Lino Ventura, Simone Signoret, Paul Meurisse,=20
Jean-Pierre Cassel, Claude Mann

ARMY OF SHADOWS, Jean-Pierre Melville's exciting 1969 film of the French =
Resistance during World War II, has been newly restored and is released =
in the U.S. for the first time. It is based on the novel by Joseph =
Kessel and on the experiences of director/writer Melville, who like =
Kessel was a member of the Resistance.

As Paris is occupied, Phillipe Gerbier and his comrades in the =
Resistance are under constant danger of discovery by the Nazis. =
Mathilde, whose family is unaware that she is a member of the =
Resistance, is an astute strategist for the group as it defies the Nazis =
and plans some elaborate escape attempts.

Playing average citizens in continual jeopardy, the cast is excellent. =
Melville maintains a taut suspense throughout. Muted colors reflect the =
loss of freedom under the Nazis. Melville's depiction of the intricate =
details of the shadowy world of the resistance network makes ARMY OF =
SHADOWS a riveting historical film noir. L.A. TIMES film critic, =
Kenneth Turan, says the following about the film: "Masterfully made, =
with no detail unattended, ARMY OF SHADOWS is a somber, reflective film. =
Though it has some of the trappings of Melville's thrillers, including =
clandestine meetings and fast cars, it is also a meditation on the =
nature of resistance and the price of courage. ARMY OF SHADOWS =
emphasizes the unheroic nature of heroism, its undramatic =
matter-of-factness. It gives a sense of the nerve-wracking combination =
of tension and boredom involved, of split-second life-and-death =
decisions, of the almost arbitrary nature of who survives and who does =
not. In addition, the film gives a sense of how savage and unrelenting =
the demands of wartime can be, and of how alone and hopeless those who =
act bravely can feel despite a shared bond of brotherhood and =
conviction. As we endure our latest national combat experience, it is =
essential to be reminded that the ostentatious heroism trumpeted by =
leaders is not necessarily the way it plays out on the ground."

SISTERS IN LAW

2005 (not rated) 104 min.=20
Cameroon/UK subtitles/Pidgin English
Director: Kim Longinotto =20
Cast: Vera Ngassa, Beatrice Ntuba

Winner of the Prix Art et Essai at the Cannes Film Festival and screened =
to acclaim at more than 90 festivals around the world, SISTERS IN LAW is =
the latest documentary from internationally renowned director Kim =
Longinotto, co-directed by Florence Ayisi. This uplifting and inspiring =
film has been a crowd-pleaser wherever it has played. The movie =
profiles two real-life African professional women - a prosecutor and a =
judge - who fight patriarchy and injustice one case at a time in a =
Cameroon courthouse. Constitutional law has proved to be a great ally =
in the ongoing fight against rape, domestic violence, and spousal abuse. =
This dynamic duo is captured in action, dispensing wisdom and =
wisecracks while trying to instill feminist values in a male-dominated =
Muslim society.

"Positively soars...Who are these women, and can they please take over =
the world soon?" - Nathan Lee, NEW YORK TIMES

TAKING SIDES

2003 (R) 105 min. Germany/some subtitles Director: Istv=E1n Szab=F3 =
  =20
Cast: Harvey Keitel, Stellan Skarsgard

After Hitler took over power in 1933, many Jewish artists were forced to =
leave Germany, persuading others to protest through voluntarily exile. =
Wilhelm Furtw=E4ngler, arguably the most distinguished conductor of his =
generation, chose to stay, serving as one of the Nazi's foremost =
cultural assets. Though never a member of the party, Furtw=E4ngler was =
the recipient of government honors and appointments, associated with =
party members, and conducted at party functions, including Hitler's =
birthday. He was named Prussian Privy Council by Goering and =
Vice-President of the chamber of Music of the Third Reich by Goebbels. =
However, Furtw=E4ngler's concerts represented pockets of resistance from =
inside Nazi Germany, and the conductor often used his position and =
contacts with the abject regime in order to save hundreds of Jewish =
musicians from the concentration camps, at his own risk. Should he be =
punished for staying in his country and agreeing to compromise, or =
should his efforts to oppose the evil regime from within be recognized? =
The American Denazification Committee gave Major Steve Arnold the task =
of carrying out the pre-trial investigation, with orders to contribute =
to the extermination of Nazism in Germany. For Major Arnold and his =
hierarchy, Furtw=E4ngler represents the moral weakness and cowardly =
complicity of the German people who enabled the emergence and =
establishment of a fascist regime.

The question of the artist's political responsibility within a =
totalitarian regime remains open to this day - whether to stay and serve =
one's own people or to leave the homeland. While Arnold's investigation =
is aimed at providing proof for the prosecution of the way in which =
Furtw=E4ngler's artistic genius contributed to the Nazi propaganda =
machine and their destructive ideology, Furtw=E4ngler answers the =
Major's accusations by limiting his responsibility to purely artistic =
motives - he chose to stay in the fatherland to bring comfort to the =
German people with his music, and not to serve the Nazis. Like a master =
conductor, director Istv=E1n Szab=F3 orchestrates the debate from =
cat-and-mouse intensity to volcanic confrontation to an intriguing =
finale, making TAKING SIDES that rare film that demands the audience to =
engage in a dialogue with the characters and take a position on an =
issue: in this case, the complicity or innocence of Dr. Wilhelm =
Furtw=E4ngler, the world-famous conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic =
during the Third Reich.

"Illuminates brilliantly the dilemma of a great, world-renowned artist =
flourishing in a totalitarian regime." - Kevin Thomas, L.A. TIMES

BEAUTY IN TROUBLE

2006 (R) 110 min. Czech Republic/subtitles =20
Director: Jan Hrebejk
Cast: An=E1 Geislerov=E1, Roman Luknar, Josef Abrham

Recent history once again intrudes upon the present-day lives of working =
Czechs in the masterful multi-character drama BEAUTY IN TROUBLE. The =
film is the latest work from world-class director, Jan Hrebejk, who =
expounds upon the overarching ideas of fate, love , and redemption found =
in his previous films. The title comes from the Robert Graves poem, =
itself adapted into a Czech popular song in the 1980's and performed in =
the film by native singer Raduza. The genesis of the film's theme was =
the first line, "Beauty in trouble flees to the good angel/On whom she =
can rely..." This is manifested in the form of a beautiful young =
mother, Marcela, who lost everything in the 2002 floods that swept =
through Prague. She's living in a Spartan flat attached to the chop =
shop run by her husband Jarda, a surly but fundamentally good man forced =
into crime to make ends meet. Just about all they've got left is =
spectacular sex, which routinely forces their children to cover their =
ears. When one of Jarda's workers steals a station wagon belonging to =
well-to-do =E9migr=E9 Czech vintner Evzen Benes, Jarda is thrown into =
prison. This forces Marcela and her children into the cramped flat of =
her timid mother and her mother's domineering husband. Having met =
briefly at the police station, vintner Benes and Marcela eventually =
begin a hesitant, low-key courtship. In time, he takes mother and =
children to his Tuscany vineyard, reconnecting with his Czech heritage, =
while Marcela sacrifices family for stability. Fate, however, has other =
ideas. The film presents a complex look at the power and changeability =
of intimate relationships.

"A thoughtful look at the forces that drive all our lives, and how even =
the most final decisions aren't necessarily final." - Martha Fischer, =
Cinematical

RIDING ALONE FOR THOUSANDS OF MILES

2005 (PG) 107 min. China/subtitles
Director: Yimou Zhang
Cast: Ken Takakura, Shinobu Terajima, Kiichi Nakai

Takata, a Japanese fisherman, has been estranged from his son Ken-ichi =
for many years. When Ken-ichi is diagnosed with terminal cancer his =
wife, Rie, summons Takata to the hospital. When Ken-ichi refuses to see =
him, Rie gives Takata a videotape about the work his son was doing on a =
documentary film in a remote region of China's Yunnan province. Still =
troubled by the relationship, Takata decides to complete his son's work =
in part to develop an understanding of his son, and in part to do =
something for him. Once in China a series of obstacles and =
relationships bring him unexpectedly closer to an understanding of =
himself and of his son.

This leisurely, reflective film will please admirers of both actor, Ken =
Takakura, and director, Yimou Zhang. What would be a predictable story =
in other hands becomes something of far more dimension with Zhang, one =
of the world's great directors, behind the camera. Using gorgeously =
filmed expanses of desert, mountains, and grasslands as a backdrop, =
Zhang's story emerges as a most eloquent plea for people to dare to =
express their feelings for their loved ones, particularly fathers for =
sons. Takata rides alone for thousands of miles not only to reconnect =
with his son, but also to reconnect with himself.

"One of the most beautiful and touching road movies in recent years" - =
Michael Wilmington, Chicago Tribune

April 20 - 8 pm=20
BABEL*

2006 (R) 143 min. Mexico/U.S.A./some subtitles
Director: Alejandro Gonz=E1lez I=F1=E1rritu
Cast: Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, Gael Garc=EDa Bernal,
Koji Yakusho, Adriana Barraza=20

BABEL is the crowning achievement in the trilogy from the unstoppable =
creative pairing of screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga and director =
Alejandro Gonz=E1lez I=F1=E1rritu. Building upon its predecessors' =
method of weaving together disparate storylines, BABEL reaches new =
heights of ambition with a tale that, in the absence of traditional =
narrative and protagonist, relies on numerous incredible performances to =
evoke an affecting relevance by framing contemporary issues in very =
human struggles and mistakes. Richard and Susan are a wealthy couple =
from San Diego who are vacationing in Morocco in order to heal after the =
death of their young child; their other two children are at home with =
their Mexican maid, Amelia. In a complex shift of ownership to which =
the audience is privy, a rifle finds its way into the hands of a local =
herdsman's young sons who recklessly take a shot at a tour bus and catch =
Susan in the shoulder, causing her to nearly lose her life. The =
distraught Richard calls home to tell Amelia of the situation, who =
promptly departs for Mexico to attend her child's wedding, with Richard =
and Susan's children in tow. Disaster thus multiplies, with the =
situation in Morocco ascribed in the media to terrorists, while Amelia =
is met with the harsh immigration policies of the Bush administration. =
Meanwhile, in Tokyo, a widower tied to the rifle in question attempts to =
deal with his memories and his raucous, promiscuous, deaf daughter.

Nearly every performance is devastating, offering an intimate, emotional =
experience that would approach melodrama if it weren't rendered so =
realistically. Cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto's color palette =
masterfully captures the muted tones of the harsh natural landscapes of =
Morocco and the Mexican border, as well as the fluorescent lights of =
Tokyo that denote another, though equally barren, end of the spectrum. =
The misunderstandings born of cultural, language, and class barriers are =
on par with those that occur between family members, depicting a world =
that, while connected in the least expected of ways, is also faced with =
a deep-seated crisis that threatens to alienate humanity from itself.

"Its complex (yet not mystifying) storytelling, forceful character =
development, and superb cinematography make this a candidate for one of =
2006's best offerings." - James Berardinelli, REELVIEWS

look at one man's commitment to expose the myths and misconceptions that =

in the wake of defeat in the 2000 election, re-set the course of his =

fire about getting the surprisingly stirring truth about what he calls =

2005, the worst storm season ever experienced in America just behind us, =
it=20

explaining=20
the dire situation. Interspersed with the bracing facts and future =

his entire life - believing there is still time to make a =

wit, smarts and hope, AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH ultimately brings home =
Gore's=20
persuasive argument that we can no longer afford to view global warming =
as a=20

Is it an egg? A pearl? Even the wisest people in their small =

don't know, so they set off on a grand adventure - through magnificent=20
landscapes - to find out the truth. This is a beautifully shot,=20
deceptively symbolic film about three boys living with their families on =
the=20
edge of the Gobi desert. In its clearest, comic terms it's the =
story of=20
their confusion when they find a ping pong ball floating down the river; =
in=20
deeper, symbolic ones, it's a more dramatic illustration of how an =
ancient=20
people now finds itself caught between two worlds. The boys may =
have found=20
a small plastic ball, but they're the ones who are caught in a game of =
ping=20
pong, slammed back and forth between their ancestors' culture and the =
modern=20
world. Before the film is over, one boy will have gone away to =
school in=20
the city; his sister will have left her boyfriend to join a dance =
troupe. =20
It is a new era of opportunity for both of them, to be sure. But, =
the film=20
suggests, they've bought that chance by selling their sense of =
wonder. =20
Speaking of the film, Michael Atkinson of THE VILLAGE VOICE says, "Could =
be a=20
meditational film - if, perhaps, it wasn't a sneaky comedy and, to boot, =
one of=20
the most breathtaking cinematic records of landscape and sky ever =

Though it=20
has some of the trappings of Melville's thrillers, including clandestine =

meetings and fast cars, it is also a meditation on the nature of =
resistance and=20
the price of courage. ARMY OF SHADOWS emphasizes the unheroic =

heroism, its undramatic matter-of-factness. It gives a sense of =
the=20
nerve-wracking combination of tension and boredom involved, of =
split-second=20
life-and-death decisions, of the almost arbitrary nature of who survives =

does not. In addition, the film gives a sense of how savage and=20
unrelenting the demands of wartime can be, and of how alone and hopeless =
those=20
who act bravely can feel despite a shared bond of brotherhood and=20
conviction. As we endure our latest national combat experience, it =

The film is the latest work from world-class director, Jan Hrebejk, who =

manifested=20
in the form of a beautiful young mother, Marcela, who lost everything in =

framing contemporary issues in very human struggles and mistakes. =
Richard=20
and Susan are a wealthy couple from San Diego who are vacationing in =

distraught=20
Richard calls home to tell Amelia of the situation, who promptly departs =
for=20
Mexico to attend her child's wedding, with Richard and Susan's children =
in=20
tow. Disaster thus multiplies, with the situation in Morocco =
ascribed in=20
the media to terrorists, while Amelia is met with the harsh immigration =
policies=20
of the Bush administration. Meanwhile, in Tokyo, a widower tied to =
the=20
rifle in question attempts to deal with his memories and his raucous,=20
promiscuous, deaf daughter.

Nearly every performance is devastating, offering an =

the=20
Mexican border, as well as the fluorescent lights of Tokyo that denote =
another,=20
