KARAMU HALL OF FAME PLAQUE INSTALLATION RECEPTION FOR THE INAUGURAL HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES WILL BE HELD AT THE KARAMU HOUSE, THE NATIONS OLDEST MULTICULTURAL ARTS INSTITUTION
CLEVELAND (OH) – Karamu Hall of Fame Plaque Installation reception and ceremony saluting the inaugural Hall of Fame inductees will be held at the Karamu House, the nation’s oldest multicultural arts institution on January 19, 2007 starting at 6:00 PM
Permanent Hall of Fame plaque installation will honor the inaugural inductees, which includes television; Broadway, film and animation star Robert Guillaume, for the Karamu National Living Legend; Ron O’Neal, star of the 1972 classic film, Superfly, also received the award posthumously; Rising Star - Imani Hakim, 13-year-old star of CW’s Everybody Hates Chris; Posthumous Local Legend - Nolan Bell and Sparkus Fantroy, the first African-Americans to perform at Karamu House; Fine Arts Legend Howard Roberts, famed musical composer, conductor and educator; Maurice “Hank” Nystrom, legendary choreographer and Benefactor - Bracy Lewis.
Susan Watson Turner will serve as keynote speaker for the plaque installation ceremony and will have opening remarks for “Permanent Collection” which opens Friday, January 19, 2006. Watson Turner served for several years at the Negro Ensemble Company as General Manager and Producing Director where she worked on such plays as A Soldier’s Play, Lifetimes’ On The Streets, Home, The Absolution of Willie Mae and many others. During her term at NEC she had the opportunity to work with a myriad of talented actors, directors, designers and writers like Frances Foster, Joseph Walker, Samm-Art Williams, Denzel Washington, Wynn Thomas, Samuel L. Jackson and Douglas Turner Ward. Karamu will introduce the world premiere of her latest play "The Fire Inside: The Story and Poetry of Nikki Giovanni" at the 2007 Ingenuity Festival. A stage reading will be held at Cleveland Public Library Main Branch on February 17, 2007 at 3 PM.
