Guest Lecture: Abayudaya: The Music and Culture of the Jewish People of
Uganda
Wednesday, February 7
7pm
$15/$12 Maltz Museum members
The Abayudaya, a community of 600 people in a remote area of eastern
Uganda, converted to Judaism more than 80 years ago. Their story
challenges stereotypes of race, religion and culture. Having endured
adversity in order to practice Judaism, their joyous musical celebration
is a testament to faith and hope. This multi-media presentation focuses
on their musical traditions, a unique blend of African rhythms and
traditional Hebrew prayer. Presenting lecturer, Rabbi Jeffrey Summit,
acclaimed ethnomusicologist has worked among the Abayudaya for the past
five years and produced the Grammy-nominated CD Abayudaya: Music from
the Jewish People of Uganda. He serves as Executive Director of the
Hillel Foundation and Associate Professor of Music at Tufts University.=20
