KARAMU HOUSE FOUNDERS, ROWENA AND RUSSELL JELLIFFE, SUBJECT OF NEW DOCUMENTARY IN CURRENT PRODUCTION, ARE NAMED ONE OF THE TOP 25 MOST INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE IN CLEVELAND HISTORY
CLEVELAND (January 29, 2007) - Rowena and Russell Jelliffe are named one of the top 25 most influential people in Cleveland history. The Jelliffes were social workers who created Karamu, the nations oldest multicultural arts institution that used innovative and creating arts programming to combat racial inequality. The Oberlin college graduates founded Karamu in 1915. It was the first theater to integrate casting on stage in the nation.
Im so happy for them, an excited Arline Burks said over the phone from Bentleyville, Ohio. Burks is currently filming A Joyful Gathering: The Jelliffe Years, a retrospective look at Karamu during the Jelliffe reign (1915 1963). Im so proud of them. Burks, of Dakota P Productions, have the blessings and support of the Jelliffe family including Rowenas and Russells son Roger Jelliffe. They play an integral role in this production. She plans to enter it at this years Cannes film festival. Burks was the first filmmaker to screen film in high definition at Cannes with the film 25 Lighthouse.
Karamu has groomed many a star on stage, television and film including Robert Guilluame (Benson), James Pickens, Jr. (Greys Anatomy), Ruby Dee, Bill Cobb, Imani Hakim (Everybody Hates Chris), Ron ONeal (Superfly), Nolan Bell, Mini Gentry (Cleveland actor Terrence Howards great-grandmother) and Greg Morris (Barney Collier of televisions Mission Impossible).
Its amazing, said Terrence Spivey, artistic director of Karamu. Isnt that something? Spivey directs Permanent Collection, a daring intimate production about racism set in an art gallery. Local theater critics have lauded Permanent Collection. Permanent Collection runs thru February 11, 2006.
Rowena and Russell Jelliffe created Karamu with the belief that the bridge to racial understanding laid most immediately in active fellowship in the arts. On October 22, 1939, a fire destroyed the original building, which was located at 2239 East 38th Street. It has been in its current location since 1949 at the corner of East 89th Street and Quincy Ave. Karamu is a Swahili word that means a place of joyful gathering.
