Paula McLain, the award-winning poet and author of the memoir, Like F=
amily: Growing Up in Other People=92s Houses (2003), will present =
=93The Shape Truth Takes: A Close Look at Contemporary Women=92s Memo=
irs,=94 on Saturday, March 3 at 2 p.m., in the Literature Department =
at Cleveland Public Library, 325 Superior Avenue.

McLain=92s talk will examine exemplary memoirs and authors with a spe=
cial focus on the works of Mary Karr (The Liar=92s Club, Cherry, etc.=
), Lucy Grealy (Autobiography of a Face), and Jo Anne Beard (The Boys=
 of My Youth). She=92ll discuss how these women=92s memoirs have shap=
ed and changed her own writing as well as the genre at large.

Like Family, McLain=92s 2003 memoir, details the fourteen years she a=
nd her two sisters spent in the foster care system in the 1970s and =
=9180s after being abandoned by both parents. Library Journal called =
the book =93a real-life White Oleander,=94 while Publishers Weekly no=
ted that Like Family =93is a brave account=85sparing no harsh details=
.=94

McLain has also published two widely praised collections of poetry: L=
ess of Her (1999) and Stumble, Gorgeous (2005). A Ticket to Ride, her=
 first novel, is forthcoming from Ecco/HarperCollins.

McLain has been the recipient of fellowships from the prestigious Yad=
do and MacDowell writers=92 colonies as well as grants from both the =
Ohio Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. She teache=
s in the MFA program for poetry at New England College and at John Ca=
rroll University in Cleveland.

-week dance workshop for women beginning Tuesday, February 13, 2007 f=
rom 6 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Branch library=

The program is part of the library=92s Women=92s History Month series=
 and is presented in conjunction with =93Freedom: A Visual Arts Exhib=
it,=94 on display at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Branch library throu=
gh March 31.

=93Freedom Dance=94 is an intergenerational workshop for women and gi=
rls aged eight years and older. No dance experience is necessary.

The series will be facilitated by Cleveland performer, teacher and ch=
oreographer, Colleen Clark. Clark received her master of fine arts de=
gree in dance from Case Western Reserve University and her bachelor o=
f arts in dance from the Ohio State University. She has worked in the=
 Greater Cleveland area for over 30 years and is known for her gentle=
, supportive teaching style and her innovative, collaborative perform=
ances.

The workshops will be held on Tuesdays, February 13th and 20th, and M=
arch 6th, 13th and 20th. The series will culminate in a dance reperto=
