It=E2=80=99s nice to know that Akron serves as a testing ground for new Amer=
ican musicals, and that Akron-area audiences don=E2=80=99t have to wait deca=
des for new pieces to trickle down from Broadway.

Last Monday, Carousel Dinner Theatre presented a developmental workshop read=
ing of the musical farce Romancing the Throne, by Randy Rogel and Kirby Ward=
. A cast of 18 rehearsed six days in preparation for the workshop, with the=20=
creators frantically re-writing throughout the rehearsal process in their ho=
tel room and Prescott=E2=80=99s lounge at the theater.

The show, which featured nine New York Equity actors and nine Baldwin Wallac=
e musical theater students, played to an invitation-only audience. It was di=
rected by Donna Drake, an original cast member from Broadway=E2=80=99s A Cho=
rus Line who=E2=80=99s also currently directing the fun Beehive at Carousel.
