  Dear Cleveland Community,

This letter is dedicated to the girl, and her husband whom I ate with in Claddagh's Pub, who doesn't like change. In short, if we better understand the nature of change, we will be better prepared and less stressed in welcoming it.

I am writing to ask for your help. A native of South Euclid, I've come home after a decade or so of frolicking about the nation and falling in various rabbit holes. Climbing out, I've found potholes battering the street where I used to clumsily play baseball, football, and hide-and-go-seek. It's discouraging to imagine the kids here who run about now attempting the games we played without twisting an ankle or tripping on their face, even if they play less awkwardly than I once did (and probably still do!).

I have a brief presentation for anyone who wants to help carefully transform the community into a prosperous, vibrant, hot one (forgive me, I haven't experienced a Cleveland winter since the last millennium!), where the technological wizardry that has become a staple of our children's schools is not infested with predatorial entities and the like. Despite what many wish us to believe, most of us are honest, hard-working people with only a few bad apples to boot.

The key ingredient to undergoing an economical, educational, and democratic transformation is integrity. So, in the oft-nuisanced tradition of Albert Einstein and Sir Isaac Newton--and even Sir Sean Connery--I've taken the unemployed writer that I am to preparing a model for transformation. That's why I'm asking for your feedback, for this model has the potential to bring in--and keep--a lot of jobs here.

Integrity first. Some will say that common integrity is a far-fetched assumption these days; they may instead believe that integrity is more uncommon than anything else with all the strife in the world, ideologically divided nations, the war on terror, the internationalization of the capitalist marketplace, and the Browns-Steelers rivalry. Our government has admitted to systemic failures in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks--there lies the first step in outlining a common integrity among us as a collective of individuals representative of a march-forthright democracy. Alas, there are many steps to be taken before assuming any idea of common integrity among us.

Whenever information is shared without integrity, or deceptively, or without honesty, our security is compromised. Information sharing has become a necessary goal within our intelligence community. The intelligence community currently transforms itself from distributing information on a need-to-know basis to a need-to-share basis. This is an attribute of common integrity within the intelligence community.

The fact that we need to share about common integrity easily fulfills the need to understand such notions in a democratic society: one that encourages open debate which thereby fuels innovation and, ultimately, a cultural renaissance within it. With common integrity, participants can acheive this.

Because this notion sounds far-fetched to even the most rarely informed individual in our society (for example, the common Browns fan rarely believes that those appointed to govern him--politicians--share a common integrity with the people), it is essential to understand the nature of transformation itself; for if we today can envision a renaissance and open exhange of ideas and innovation, it is still not enough. We need to embrace change, a necessary and universal activator to navigate us all away from the current era of systemic failures (e.g., the very notion of the war on terror prescribes a war without any logical end, for war itself is an act of terror).

Scrutiny is essential to understanding transformation. A good parent scrutinizes his child in order to develop the child into a respected, successful adult. It is in our nature, as such it is perhaps our most important attribute: the ability to adapt. Transformation is also inherent in the laws of physics, energy, and the exchange of information in cyberspace: ideas shape from language to numbers to waves and back to numbers then language and another's idea all over again.

The ancient (and, notably, some contemporary) Greeks gave us democracy, the vehicle for transforming a society to a freely advanced one, with the theater, a vehicle for displaying the power of transformation. Perhaps this is why some see politicians so often as "liars" or "phonies" or "actors": because the theater and the democracy are both merely transformative in nature.

Integrity becomes the delineating factor among us, a point to measure the strength of our government's ability to transform us from a state of uncertainty to a strong, peaceful one while leaving the theater as it is on Broadway, in Hollywood, and of course at the Playhouse! To acheive this would be a measure of journalistic integrity among the global cosmopolitan media, among as well other international standard setting organizations*. Les Moonves' and CBS' recent clean-up of the Rather "MemoGate" scandal is a burgeoning example of this.

For some reason it just dawned on me that Men's Health magazine listed Cleveland as the "dumbest city" in America. Maybe it's healthier to banner their magazine Men's Dumbest Writers, for last time I checked, cities as a general rule of logic do not yet have the capacity to think!

Anyway, sometimes when we feel the need to defend our ideas, our democracy, and our freedom, we feel the simultaneous need to compromise our integrity. In the age old profession of the intelligence officer, there has always been an aim to deceive, to conceal, for gain or in defense. Each time this is done, our integrity for better or worse may be compromised. When integrity is severely diminished, our security dissolves like a big dumb lake-effect cloud over the city.

Clearly, our government is in trouble and has its work to do, but "governance" can no less be attributed to those officials getting a paycheck from Uncle Sam than to those who operate private industries which contribute to the government's products and services. Similarly, our "intelligence community" can no less be attributed to those employed with the CIA, FBI, DIA, NSA, DHS, MI-5, KGB, et cetera than to those of us who utilize the most comprehensive intelligence collection and distribution apparatus known to mankind, the Internet. Apparently, governance within the intelligence community of modern times requires a common integrity among us all. I should warn those still using the abacus (a beautiful instrument, no less!) that I'm about to get a bit technical here.

Since integrity is synonymous with honesty, and since both signify a formative act of communication, which involves the effective transmission of information among two or more parties, it is critical to note that our systems and the operators of such in the Information Age must be scrutinized before embracing any idea of common integrity. Consider the breadth of the computer security industry, and imagine an equally as lucrative integrity industry (both security and integrity comprise the tenets of Information Assurance within the IT industry).

The biggest conceptual tangible to arise lately from quantum mechanics has been the Internet. An extraordinary device within the Age of Information, the Internet contains a vast array of transmittive components, including wireless technologies, power grids, satellite systems, and radio frequency distribution mechanisms. The collective whole at which these seemingly daunting technologies peer is known as the Internet.

Contrary to popular opinion, the Internet was not invented by any single human being, as quantum mechanics does illustrate. Nor did Ben Franklin invent electricity. Instead, the generally alluded-to invention resides in the design and scope of computing languages which position the display and sharing of our own sensory information upon, within, and between our computer terminals, television, radio, and cellular devices. The "invention" is a means of transmitting information, comparable to that of a power line, a microscope, a telescope, or a satellite dish. The Internet, on the other hand, presents to us a quantum fabric of a universe with limitless potential that we have merely peered into in recent decades. It's time to take back the bytes.

Information sharing stands as the primary force behind the wondrous collective known as the Internet. All the truly great aspects of the Internet today are going to increase exponentially tomorrow, and that is a good thing for the job-seekers and company-makers here in town.

Because the "Deadwood" of the Information Age has opened up the global marketplace significantly, it would be ridiculous not to discuss the powerful effects of capitalism upon a democratic society. Big business trumpets the Information Age as a renaissance itself, and to some extent, rightly so. Trade proliferates across the planet, at a rate that has exceedingly passed the rate by which integrity has traveled.

  Why is this so?

As some politicans are to democracies of the transformative gifts first transmitted by the Greeks, and as actors are to the theater, so are marketing and advertising folks to capitalism. With the market as massive and global as it has become, why does big business feel the need to place billions of capital into their marketing departments? They might simultaneously engage in the need for common integrity between themselves and their most important object of commerce, the consumer. This is where your help comes in, marketeers, IT wizards, educators, and artisans:

Later this year I will present a model by which the internet can be utilized as a primary agent for consumers to inject integrity back into the marketplace, thereby solidifying and securing the innovative and thriving state of at least this part of the free world. I'm willing to give a peak of this to business owners and educators in our communities here who have the expertise to integrate this model and fill up the potholes.

Common integrity is in us all. We cannot be secure without it. We cannot innovate without it. We cannot assume we are in a renaissance without applying it, and we certainly cannot transform our society's dark days into a cultural renaissance without understanding it.

Just as religion and politics have been noted as a bad mix, so often are science and politics viewed as dangerous mixes in the process of debate. With the Age of Information upon us, however, the need for integrity demands not only a debate between characters of typically unrelated disciplines, but an engagement of ideologies and practices which have previously been shirked. Such shirking is fortunately and almost a thing of the past. This century, our common integrity moves us toward innovation, progress, and freedom of thought.

By scrutinizing the nature of transformation, especially as it relates to the Information Age in which we live today, we can confidently assume to walk together on a path toward freedom, education, and integrity.

By transforming the Internet into a sophisticated source of integrity within the marketplace of capitalism, the democratic process--which includes self-governance, means of innovation, diplomacy, and the individual freedoms of its people--will not only be preserved but become the essential ingredient for a renaissance. Go Cavs!

  Help filling these potholes, please?

  Best,

  Mike Norton

>From Recent Students

Jean Zarzour is the coolest thing since ice cubes! She made me feel like
her best friend the minute I walked in the door which really helped me to
feel comfortable enough to explore what my voice could do. I have been
waiting a long time to talk with someone who has this much insight into the
business. Kristina Rivera
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I’ve done lots of television and film work, and even some voice over; but
the world of voice over is so specialized, that, in spite of working with
other voice over coaches, I never felt like I was ‘ready’ to do my own
demo. After just a few hours with Jean it all fell into place! Her advice
and coaching were right on target in her class, and invaluable in the
recording studio right through to the finished product. I would not
hesitate to use Jean for special projects as well as to continue to keep my
newly found skills in tune, and I highly recommend Jean’s classes for
beginner through experienced actors! Linda Castro (award winning actress
with co-staring roles on ER, The Shield, Cold Case, Philly, Silk Stalkings
and Veronica Mars)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have been wanting a better audio demo for years. Jean Zarzour's expert
advice and coaching have been invaluable in helping me to create one.
Thanks, Jean. Pete Ferry (Appearing in The Rose Tattoo at Ensemble
Theater, March 16 - April 1)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The minute you meet Jean, you get your first lesson in self-confidence. She
has a great gift for assessing the strengths and weaknesses of each student,
addressing the concerns, questions and specific goals of each individual.
Her friendly and relaxed approach coupled with her passion for what she does
makes for a juicy environment for creative challenge and growth. Highly
recommended for people at any stage of their voiceover career. - Anne
McEvoy (most recently seen in Permanent Collection at Karamu Theater)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

our voice"! The trip to The Reel Thing was awesome! Jimmy and Jean make
such a great team! Thanks again for a great experience! Thanks again! -
Cathy Nadolski

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This work is far harder than anyone has a clue about. You've been so honest
about what it really takes, Jean. Hard work. Much like any other area of
acting. How great to walk out with a completed CD! It's been an outstanding
experience! - Beverly

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After just two voice over classes with Jean Zarzour, I was so inspired! You
really get a sense of her knowledge and experience in the field. Jimmy at
The Reel Thing took the time with each of us to make our demos top notch.
Working with such professionalism elevates us. You ROCK, Sista! - Sharon

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I just hope you will have more classes in the future--you have so much to
share & I want to learn it ALL!!!! Recording at The Reel Thing was
fantastic -- what a unique opportunity to record our work at a professional
sound studio! - Ellen

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was amazing to put our skills to the test in the "real world" setting of
a professional studio, and to hear the final results! Jimmy was great to
work with. He was professional and personable, and he gave very helpful
feedback.- Nicole

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You'll come out sounding just as professional as you can be. Recording at
The Reel Thing is the perfect end to the class because it shows us that all
of our hard work has paid off. You come away with a very professional radio
spot. - Laurel Johnson

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Whether you're just beginning or, like me, need to have the rust polished
off your skills, Jean can take you from printed page to a ready for prime
time MP3 demo. - Marje Rody
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks to Jean Zarzour's outstanding guidance, colleagues and acquaintances
have noticed a marked difference in my verbal demeanor during simple
occasions such as voicemail messages and general conversation with clients.
That alone has been worth my time and effort! - Coletta West

More Testimonials

>From Jimmy Silver, Owner of The Reel Thing Recording Studios

"Over the years, Jean's students show up prepared and well-schooled in voice
over technique and understanding of the craft. If you want to start to
develop your skills as a voice over talent, Jean's class is a good place to
start."

>From Play House Sq. Center

"Thank you for making the Extreme Festival an incredible weekend. When I
saw you working with the kids, encouraging them with high expectations, I
knew you had the talent for both putting the show together and making the
kids happy. Although other people could have pulled the weekend off, your
personality and interaction with the kids really made a difference. I can't
wait to work with you again! Thanks again and welcome as one of our favorite
new teaching artists at Playhouse Sq.!!" Ray Gargano, Education Outreach
Manager, Playhouse Square Center

>From The Beck Center

"I Have had the pleasure of employing Jean Zarzour as a teacher of Film and
Television Acting. She is always prepared and her lesson plans are set well
in advance. Jean is especially adept at the ability to read a student,
assess his or her needs and meet those needs. The students love her. Her
personality works well with kids of all ages, even the old kids like me! I
can whole heartedly recommend Jean Zarzour as a teacher." Meg
Chamberlain, Director of Theater Education 1996-2006

"Jean Zarzour has been part of the Beck Center Education Outreach staff
since 1998. She is a gifted actress and comedienne whom the children
thoroughly enjoy. She is always prompt, well-prepared, responsible and
relates well to children and adults." Lynda Sackett, Director, Dance
Education & Former Director of Education Outreach
